The Premier Collection opens with a double dose of equine artistry in 2019! We’re excited to introduce to you artist Josine Vingerling’s first Traditional-scale sculptures for Breyer: Rhian and Cadell, Welsh Mountain Pony mare and foal. The Welsh Mountain Pony, or Section A Welsh Pony, originally called the mountains of Wales home. Much like their ancestors, today’s Welsh Ponies have stamina and versatility in spades. While diminutive in stature, the Welsh Pony’s combination of refinement and strength lends to them being exceptional riding and driving ponies.
A timeless scene of a watchful mare with her frolicking foal has been expertly captured in these sculptures. Rhian and Cadell were also painted by Josine. Mare Rhian has a soft dapple-grey coat with an intricate sabino pattern, and her foal Cadell’s is a sooty buckskin. Both have detailed eyes and a chalky white basecoat. When paired together, the mare’s soft coloring beautifully accents her colt’s coat.
When sculpting a set, the artist must keep the interaction between the pieces in mind. Of this pair Josine says, “The upwards position of the foal and the turned neck of the mare connect the two sculptures. It's fun to think that the owner of the set chooses the composition when the models are displayed and therefore has influence over my artwork.”
Trained in classical dressage, Josine’s background as a rider aids her artwork in more than just the understanding of movement and anatomy. She says, “When riding, I focus on giving the horse back his freedom of movement under saddle, not to hinder him with my seat and aids...This increases the emotional bond between horse and rider enormously, they move as one. I try to capture that feeling in my sculptures.”
