March/April 2017 Breyer Photo Show Contest Results

Fantasy Frolic

By Sara Bowman (Kucharski)

When I found out that "Fantasy Frolic" was the theme for the March/April photo contest, I was not sure what to expect. I knew that there would be lots of unicorns and Pegasus, but when reviewing the many entries, I was surprised at how cute they were! This theme was really refreshing because it was about make believe, mythical equines, and imagination. It did not matter if tack was correct or the horse did not have the correct breed. So many times entries are limited by what real horses can do, but not so with this theme! Some of the entries were simple while others appeared to have been taken from the scene of a movie. It was also very nice to see Wind Dancers! I've been to lots of model horse shows and very rarely do you see Dancers, especially customized ones. I was also jealous of all the entries that had real flowers in the scenes; here in Michigan, as I judged your entries, we are expecting snow and have no flowers!! Thank you to all who entered and I really hope they enjoyed creating their entries as much as I did judging them.

This entry best combines the theme of spring and fantasy. A spring unicorn foal born in a green meadow embodies new life that comes each spring with a fantastic twist. The lighting in this entry gives it an ethereal feeling to the whole scene, almost like you have stumbled through a clearing to see something wonderful.

If it hadn't been for how amazing the first place entry was, this one would have won. A Pegasus getting ready to take off by a pond on a spring day combines spring and fantasy together in such a way that you can almost hear the wings rustling in the wind. I also might have had to pick my jaw up off the ground upon seeing this particular model!! Congrats to whoever owns this Muse!

This entry is simple but clear and attracted my attention right away. A tiny unicorn foal lying under fresh spring flowers shows the new life of spring that is just around the corner. One can almost imagine she is waiting for mom to come back from her own adventure.

What embodies spring more than a May Pole celebration? This shows the fun and warmth spring eventually brings. A nice fantasy touch is added with tiny winged Stablemates.

5th Place

Tiff R., NC

This entry makes me think of the bushes that attract butterflies. I imagine this bush with purple flowers has attracted these winged horses in much the same way. With the sun on their wings, this entry has a very warm feeling to it.

6th Place

Angel B., OH

This entry features a tiny Mini Whinnie with wings coming to the hand of a tiny fairy. With a background of new plants coming up for spring this entry uses the theme well. This entry also shows that you don't have to use just Traditional or Classic sized models in these contests.

Look at those little fillies fly! This entry makes me think of Fantasia; I can practically hear music playing with this horse dancing and surrounded by little butterfly horses. I'm not sure how they got the Stablemates to fly but it sure is cute!

This entry embodies spring very well with the tulips in the background. These little butterfly Pegasus babies look like they are ready to kick up their hooves and take off after a long winter.

This entry is simple but striking with the use of a blue horse in the foreground. A small spring flower can be seen in his mouth, a signal that winter will soon be gone.

This entry looks like the beginning of an interesting adventure for this herd of horses! A magical unicorn appears in a ring of azalea flowers. The color of this entry is what first attracted me to it. I wonder what will happen next.

Another very cute entry with an itchy foal with wings. So many of these entries featured Stablemates that had wings attached. With a background of spring's first flowers, this entry fits the theme wonderfully.

This entry sure made me smile! It is simply done but shows a little Pegasus flying across a night sky. What kid hasn't dreamed about flying horses late at night when looking up at the moon?
