Breyer Photo Show August 2016 - Results!

Showmanship is a performance class that showcases a handler's ability to present their horse in hand. The horse should work harmoniously with the handler while performing a pattern that may include such maneuvers as backing and pivots, as well as leading at a walk and trot and setting up for inspection. While halter is also an in-hand event, it is judged on conformation. In showmanship, however, the horse's conformation isn't considered.

Classes are held in either indoor or outdoor arenas, so a photo setup should include a fence or wall, complete with dirt or sand footing. Cones are often used to mark locations of transitions or maneuvers in the pattern. Putting a judge in the scene can also add realism. Handlers may show in either English or western attire, including a hat or helmet, consistent with the type of horse they're showing. Chaps and spurs are not allowed, because they could pose a tripping hazard. Bridles are optional for English handlers, but western handlers must use a halter. Braiding of manes and tails is optional for English horses.

This contest drew a large and competitive turnout. There were several creative "winner's circle" setups. While they didn't adhere to the showmanship theme, they'd be great in a scene class! Unfortunately, some remarkable entries were disqualified for not sticking with Breyer horses and dolls. Be sure to read rules carefully! To show your entry to its best advantage, be sure your photo is well lit, shows your horse up close (with no parts cut off), is in focus, and has a lens angle approximately even with the horse's withers. Photographing your horse and handler at an angle can be tricky, so a side view usually works best.

1st Place

Dayna S., Ohio

This is a lovely example of showmanship! The handler is nicely turned out and is holding the reins correctly for leading. The bridle is properly adjusted, except the cavesson cheek piece could be a bit further from the horse's eye. The horse trots up willingly next to his handler. The background is uncluttered and puts the emphasis on the horse. Great job!

2nd Place

Willow C., Washington

Excellent lighting and framing make this an eye-catching photo. The horse is set up squarely and is alert. The handler is properly attired, however she's gazing upward. Showmen should maintain eye contact with the judge and keep an eye on the horse. There's a fence on the left side of the photo; I'd like to see it continue behind the horse.

3rd Place

Sue S., Michigan

This is a realistic indoor arena, even down to the details of an "Inherent Risk" notice on the wall and a bit of dirt smudged on the bottom of the white wall. Both the handler and judge are nicely turned out. The cone and judge's clipboard are nice touches. "Quartering" is the typical way to change sides during inspection. For proper quartering, the handler should be on the other side of the horse. However, she's maintaining good eye contact with the judge.

4th Place

Nancy C-P., Ohio

The background poster of the arena and spectators makes this very realistic. The footing blends fairly well into the background dirt, which can be tricky to achieve! Lady Phase is a good choice for depicting a halted showmanship horse. Cones help distinguish this as a showmanship class. The handler is nicely dressed. To make this even better, the handler should stand at a 45-degree angle to the horse's shoulder.

5th Place

Sarah P., Ohio

With his calm demeanor, Zippo is also a great showmanship horse. Both the judge and handler are correctly attired. Adding a notepad in the judge's hand would be a nice touch. The handler has excellent eye contact with the judge, and her horse is obedient. Adding a more realistic background would create a more interesting photo.

6th Place

Renee P.

This is a creative angle that works well. The handler is confidently leading his horse into the arena. The setting looks like a typical fair grounds. The halter fits well and is appropriate for a stock horse. To make this photo even better, avoid the shadow and get more light on the subject. Also zoom in a bit so the horse and handler appear larger in the frame.

Honorable Mention

Kayla L., Maine

Once again the Lady Phase mold shows her suitability for showmanship. The halter fits well, and the cone is a nice detail. To make this setup more correct, the handler should be standing 45 degrees off the right shoulder and holding the lead near the halter with his right hand. This is a well-lit, color coordinated photo!
