Workshops at BreyerFest offer hands-on learning experiences for everyone! Whether you are a novice or veteran in the model horse hobby, we have a workshop for you, but sign up early because these dream classes fill up fast!  New for 2018, ALL workshops will be held in the Museum Gallery and Education Room (downstairs) of the International Museum of the Horse, unless otherwise noted on the schedule.

Reservations are first-come, first-served. Classes are limited to 15 people and cost $30 each.

Levels are defined as follows:

Beginner - has never taken a workshop,
Intermediate - has taken a similar BreyerFest workshop or has experience in the subject,
Advanced - has extensive knowledge of the subject and has taken previous BreyerFest workshops.

Advanced Sculpting

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
A great class for adult sculptors! Take your sculpting to new levels! Focusing on biomechanics and anatomy, Morgen Kilbourn will bring each student through the intricacies of adding movement and detail to your sculptures.

Arabian Halter
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Work with Tiffany Purdy and learn how to make your own Arabian halter. Supplies are provided, but you may want to bring along your favorite Arabian model!

Beginning Pattern Design
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Join Lesli Kathman for this fun new workshop! Ever look at a reference photo and wonder about the areas you couldn't see? Or questioned if a particular trait was correct for the pattern you were painting? Do you want to create unique, eye-catching pintos and appaloosas that are still realistic? This workshop will cover the basics of designing white patterns. Participants will draw their patterns on unpainted Stablemate models, which they can take home and paint. Students will also take home extensive reference material for later use.

Canvas Creations
Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Join Jane Tilton to create your own horse-inspired artwork! Jane will walk you through how to paint your own canvas creation. Starter canvas with line art will be provided. Take home your artwork and a Classics scale model.

Carousel Horses
Skill Level: Intermediate
Create your own realistic carousel horse with Laura Rock-Smith using a Breyer Classics scale model.  Attendees will learn about the basic history of American Carousels during their Golden Age as they work on learning the basics of sculpting trappings including draping and saddle making. In addition attendees will learn how to set jewels to make their creation sparkle. If time permits some advance trapping skills will be demonstrated.

Cartooning Horses
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced, ages 7+
This workshop hosted by Laurie Jo Jensen is sure to get your creative juices flowing and is geared towards all ages, 7 and above. Create your own cartoon of your favorite Breyer Creation, or bring a photo of your own horse or pony. This class will teach you the basics to build upon to do your own comic creations. No talent required, just a sense of humor!

Christmas Ornaments
Skill Level: Beginner
Join Tina Dils to get a jump start on your holidays with our Christmas in July workshop! Learn how to incorporate your favorite Breyer Stablemates® models into festive ornaments.

Color Matching for Restoration
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
This workshop lead by Nan Wagner offers step-by-step instruction and hands-on interaction to help you understand basic color theory and how it applies to repairing your favorite models accurately.

Skill Level: Beginner
Conformation is more than just good looks! Join Candace Liddy and learn how and why a horse is built a certain way or how their breed history has affected their conformation. Halter class judges in the "real horse" world and the model horse world look for certain key conformation details when they pin their winners - find out what to look for in your herd! The class will meet in the Kids Craft & Activity Tent, but will then head up to the stables for a look at the horses!

Creative Model Showing
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
New for 2018, Lori Daniels, Pinto horse world champion, teaches participants how to excel with show ring details. Didn't do as well as you'd hoped in the show? Lori will explain correct application of tack and showing strategies. Bring 2 tacked up models or just take notes!

Dapple and Duns: Starbursts, Stripes and Pizzazz
Skill Level: Intermediate
Come paint a horse with us! Learn several techniques for adding pizzazz to your model. Dappling types and dun factors will be covered. Everyone will take a turn using the airbrush to see how this tool works. Colors, techniques and confirmation will be discussed as well as preparation techniques needed to complete a quality painted model.

Dioramas and Props
Skill Level: Beginner
Ever wondered how to create a life-like scene to use in photo shows and performance classes? Learn how with artist Carmen Robertson! Now is your chance to create your own snapshot of a horse race!

Drawing Horses
Skill Level: Beginner
Drawing Horses is Candace Liddy's comprehensive class on each phase of drawing the perfect horse - beginning from basic starting points up through adding finer details like eyes, muscle tone and markings. Candace is a long time equine artist and teacher. She brings years of experience to the BreyerFest classroom and is looking forward to working with students of ALL AGES.

Dream Horse Kit
Skill Level: Beginner
Students will work alongside Kristin Albert as she guides them through this fun kit for painting a model horse and adding a mohair mane and tail. Each student gets his or her own kit including a Breyer Classics scale model horse!

Dress up a Track Pony
Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Deck out your favorite "Track Pony" with hobbyist Didi Hornberger! Learn how to create a colorful matching saddle towel, leg wraps, and a race cavesson with fleece noseband for that Special Race!  This workshop is great for most skill levels, but will require a small amount of hand sewing.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Work alongside Val Starcher to learn how to add detail and intrigue to your favorite model horse. Due to the use of sharp objects, this workshop is limited to intermediate to advanced students.

Etching Decorators
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Work alongside hobbyist Lauren Hoeffer to learn how to etch your model in the decorator style. Due to the use of sharp objects, this workshop is limited to intermediate to advanced students.

Floral Shoulder Drape
Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Work with hobbyist Didi Hornberger to create a unique Off to the Races shoulder drape for Celebration Model Brass Hat! This workshop is great for all skill levels, but will require a small amount of hand sewing. Please bring your Celebration Model with you to this workshop.

How to Model Horse Show
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Liz Isham Cory's hands-on showing tutorial takes model horse collecting to a whole new level! Learn what makes models stand out from the crowd. Find out how to spot a winner in your collection! Do you have a model that you need help assigning a breed to, or are not sure why it does not place well? Bring your model (limit one) and receive guidance!

Introduction to Customizing
Skill Level: Beginner
Ever wanted to try your hand at customizing but didn't know where to start? Let Mindy Young get you started! Using Stablemates® models, try your hand at customizing your first horse.

Just for Kids! Painting
Skill Level: Intermediate, 10 & Up
Join Jenn Danza and create your own model masterpiece! This class is for kids ages 10 and up who want to learn advanced skills for painting their own model horses. Classics model included.

Leather Stamping
Skill Level: Beginners, ages 10+
Ever wonder how the make a model saddle look like a hand tooled real saddle? LeeAnn Masters will teach you all about the stamps and tools available that can work for model saddles and how to work and dye the leather.

No-Sew Pony Pouches
Skill Level: Beginner
Jane Tilton is back with this fun workshop for beginners! You'll learn how to create your own no-sew pony pouch to safely transport your favorite model. You'll be able to customize your creation as well! Traditional model is also included.

Oh, Bay-be! Pastelling
Skill Level: Beginners only, ages 12+
Join artist Mindy Berg as she takes you through the steps of pastelling a bay horse, exploring the basics in pastel art. This is a workshop for beginners who have not used this medium before and participants will be taken through the basic steps on how to create a beautiful bay horse using pastels.

Painting Your Horse
Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Come paint a horse with us! Learn a variety of shading techniques, including blocking, dry brush and sponging. Take a turn on the airbrush to get an idea of what this tool can do. Colors, techniques and confirmation will be discussed as well as preparation techniques needed to complete a quality painted model.  This year, there are two chances to take this fun workshop!

Skill Level: Intermediate, 10 & Up
Pastels are a great way to layer soft, realistic colors on your model horse and add shading and detail. Laura Thomson demonstrates the techniques for using these chalks including how to make them stay on when you're through.

Pinto and Appaloosas Painting 101
Skill Set: Beginner to Intermediate
Learn how to create perfect spots and dots on your custom models with artist Karen Zorn! You'll learn how to create the perfect mottling on an Appaloosa and discover the difference between an Overo and Tobiano in this fun class!

Racing Bridles
Skill Level: Beginners, ages 12+
Learn the basics of how to assemble a realistic racing bridle for your model horse. Join instructor LeeAnn Masters, who traditionally conducts the English Bridle workshops, for her new workshop specially tailored to this year's Off to the Races theme.

Repairing Horses
Skill Level: Beginner - Advanced
Think of it as plastic surgery for your models! This hands-on class will walk you through the methods of repairing a broken leg, ear or tail. Class requires use of glue, sculpting epoxy and motor tools.

Skill Level: Beginner
Learn to sculpt with hobbyist Maggie Bennett! Students will learn the basics from armature to final figurine.

Spanish Browbands
Skill Level: Beginners to Advanced, ages 10+
Learn to make an authentic style Spanish presentation halter and lead shank, often seen on Andalusian and Lusitano horses in the show ring. In this beginner level course run by hobbyist Marcella Peyre-Ferry, you will learn how to measure for size when making tack, how to prepare the leather lace, and install buckles. Participants should feel comfortable using needles and sharp scissors.

Stall Decoration
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced, ages 9+
Sommer Prosser leads this fun workshop again in 2018! Paint and assemble a wooden stall for your "Classics" scale horses!  Students will receive Breyer's "Hilltop Stable" Barn Kit, which features sliding doors and three windows.  Horse stall will be painted with acrylics, and put together in class.  Students will also get fun and creative ideas on how to customize their barn even more when they get home.  Perfect class for kids 9+ and adults, or younger kids with some parental assistance.  

Suncatcher Stablemates
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Using glass paint and clear Stablemates models, create unique suncatchers with a translucent finish with hobby expert Sommer Prosser. This year, there are two chances at BreyerFest to take this fun workshop!
