Dancing in December, Breyer Dressage!

By Heather Malone-Bogle

Dressage is all about discipline and precision. It's the endless pursuit of perfection, in balance and harmony in communication with your equine partner. As we all know, perfection is never possible, but the pursuit of it is gratifying as you learn more and more about this ancient art and how to execute it. None of the entries here are perfect, but they have great creativity and skill showcased. There are some great future performance showers in this contest, as well as some amazing photographers.

Entries were judged on equal parts Creativity, Skill, Accuracy and Adherence to the Theme "Dancing in December - Breyer Dressage." The theme was a tad murky whether it was strictly dressage competition, scene, winter, or not winter so I was not overly strict on the realities of "in competition test requirements." That said, I did give some "dings" for rider-less entries and not using Breyer brand dolls, etc.

I want to stress the creativity being rewarded, and the authenticity of set ups. Photographic skill in photo shows matters as much as the entry itself. Creativity sets an entry apart from the run-of-the-mill box checking entry. I was impressed by the time taken to set these models up and the eye for composition comprising many of these. Thanks to all for participating!

This is an excellent picture. It is composed so well. Clear shot of the entry, non-distracting background, and the entry is in focus. The footing and railing look great. The rider looks great, too, though her leathers are far too short for dressage. She has nice control of the reins. The saddle is fitted well, though the pad is too big. The bridle looks great right down to the number. The movement seems to be intended as a canter pirouette (this would have worked MUCH better with Valegro), which is out of sync for the low-level outfitting here, but overall this entry excels. Great job!

Samantha H., VA

This is a super fun entry. I love the deep snow and Valegro's Santa hat! The staging is done very well with the rail and decor. The tack fits well and is proper, except for the spit bit. The rider is positioned well. The flying bight on the rein and leg position of the rider lends dynamic motion to the scene. My only minor nit-picking concerns the plain white wall and the loose broadband, tight throatlatch. Very nice work.

Hannah T., ND

This is a striking composition photographically: the background is lovely and non-distracting, and the head-on shot is focused well and looks great. However, it is hard to see the full picture of what is going on with the tack and doll. From this angle though, the bridle and saddle look well-fitted and the doll is well-positioned. It is framed in a manner that I can't see the footing or rail. The bit of snow on the withers is out of scale and distracts from an overall beautiful scene. Excellent job!

Kayla L., ME

What a clean entry for such a small scale! Great choice on the mold. The tack is a little chunky but fits well and is fitted is super clean. The background is lovely. The shallow depth-of-focus really highlights the entry. The footing is excellent. The model is a perfect choice. My only BIG wish is for a dressage rail and a rider! Excellent work!

Tammy H., MN

This is a nice entry. The tack is well-fitted and the horse is suitable for the class. The rider is in a nice position. I wish I could see the whole horse. The bridle looks like a drop-nose which I am not sure is the intention. The background passes for an indoor ring, but seems like a schooling show, Could use more effort there. The horse and rider look great though. Overall nice job.

Maddie K., MS

This is a nice entry. Valegro is a great choice. His tack is properly fit and is well done. His snaffle rein looks slightly thick. The bling on the cavesson and broadband is a nice touch. His stirrup is even positioned right, even though no rider is there. The sticky wax could be less obvious. The background is not taking away from the entry and the railing is nice. The picture is framed well and in good focus. Excellent job!

Kaleigh B., GA

This is a really lovely, well-composed picture. It uses a more liberal interpretation of the contest theme. I love the creativity and interpretation of the dancing theme though it's technically not a dressage class. The fit of the halter is impeccable, the horse choice is excellent and the horse looks great. The blanket is a tad too big. This is far and away the best photograph artistically in the group. Otherwise, super job!
