Breyer Models Celebrate Valentine's Day, too! - Results

By Didi Hornberger

We hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day! We're going to extend the love this week with our February Breyer Photo Show results! Our best month yet, with over 90 entries, there were too many lovely entries to mention!

Congratulations to Dawne from Powell Butte, OR!

What happier place is there for two horse lovers to get together on Valentine's Day to say "I care for you"? And whose horse would not want to live in this immaculate and beautifully decorated stable? This scene is enchanting, with everything in the right place, and everything correct to scale, especially with the soft shaft of sunlight shining in through the right aisle. The Valentine decorations are perfectly placed and not overdone, the stabled horses are watching the couple with interest, and everything in this photo draws the observer's eye straight to the main subjects, the two affectionate friends, who form a "heart" with their arms.

The "paver stones" in the foreground could be a tad smaller, but perhaps this stable was built with an indoor garden or a patio, as the baskets with fresh greenery and tiny white flowers would seem to suggest.

This is an altogether heartwarming Valentine's Day photo!

Dashing Latin boyfriend "RCH Ventarrones" gallantly courts "Lady Cupid" with an exquisite Valentine rose and a lovely box of sweets. What lady does not love to receive flowers and candy on Valentine's Day? Facial expression in a photograph says a lot, and judging by the demure expression in Lady Cupid's eyes, she is tickled pink! Perhaps these are munchy "alfalfa candies," since they are green? Maybe with mouth-watering sugar cubes tucked inside?

The addition of 2 or 3 pink or red candies in the candy box would have diverted the eye from so much heavy solid red in the background, and the gold heart on the box could have been better centered, and laid flat. But the photographic composition of the subject matter is gorgeous, and the sweet expression in the mare's eyes speaks volumes to the Valentine's Day criteria.
Well done!

Sometimes stark simplicity gets a point across like no other method. What a straightforward message this cute, roly-poly Shetland Pony is bringing to his "Mom"! The red valentine at the dead center of the photo immediately tells the viewer what this subject matter is all about, and the pony looks sassy and proud of himself, to have thought up this playful way to greet his Mom on Valentine's Day.

Pony appears to be trotting through ankle-deep snow, but of course since Valentine's Day always falls in February, snowy footing can be quite appropriate. The plain blue background looks like sky. but I feel that the addition of anything else in the bare-bones background of this photo would only serve to detract from this particular scene. In this case, "less is better", and the Valentine's Day message comes across loud and clear, with a lot of "Pony Pizzaz"!

The stable Dalmatian is making his rounds thru his stable on Valentine's Day. Secretariat awaits his canine companion with a Valentine in his mouth, and Passport is watching something else altogether out of the frame. But Sucsesion gently greets their spotted friend with his very own pink valentine. Freshly bedded clean stalls, filled hay nets, and clear feed tubs give a sense of realism. The playful barn kitten is adorable, and the festive pink and red halters enhance the Valentine's Day theme.

This photo is opposite in composition from the one before it, with lots and lots of detail. Sometimes it is difficult not to let the subject theme overwhelm the photo, and this photo might look better with a few less places to draw the eye all at once. The flower pot is too large to be in scale, and the details on the tack trunk are difficult to see, and actually add little to the overall picture. And the stall posts might do with a few less red hearts. The horse trailer in the background works OK. However, there is much evident charm here, and the photo tells an appealing story, as well.

Just enough bright spots of Valentine color light up this cute stable scene of Stormy presenting her mother Misty with a Valentine wish. Misty's perfectly fitted red halter and Stormy's neat neck ribbon are festive and appropriate, and the apple at Stormy's feet as a gift for her Mom is just the right sentiment. The stable is bright and clean with an open window for fresh air, and the dark green corner feed tub is wonderfully realistic and in scale. Both ponies appear freshly groomed and clean.

The view of a snow-covered pine tree thru the stable window lends a distinctive "February" feeling. And the Valentine sentiment comes across loud and clear, between these 2 cute Chincoteague ponies!

This romantic Valentine picnic has a lot going on. Flicka has come to the picnic wearing a jeweled Valentine necklace, and Big Ben is presenting her with a large handsome Valentine. Their picnic table appears to be set with two tasty plates of alfalfa, while their waiter, Hidalgo, serves them with a bucket of (champagne?) The picnic table is set with a pink cloth and a bottle of flowers, and appears to be at a comfortable height for the picknickers to eat. Hidalgo sports a waiter's bow tie, and carries a waiter's napkin over his foreleg.

There is a bit too much "chestnut coloring" grouped together in the center of this photo, and the 3 horses appear crowded. The "waiter" horse would have given the photo the appearance of more depth and less crowding if the model used was one of the non-chestnut, solid colored Rearing Silvers; such as the "Black Beauty". The "waiter" horse would also look better if he was set a little more in the background from Flicka and Big Ben, giving them more space to be the center of Valentine attention. Some sort of green footing would also have helped to defuse that tight grouping of "chestnut", and sharpened up the picnic table details. However the sentiment is delightful, and the horses look like they are sharing a memorable Valentine's Day together!

Great job with the February Breyer Photo Show everyone! We can't wait to see what you submit for the March, Wrapping up the Season with Western Pleasure photo show!
