Utterly Horses Hullabaloo 2012

9/26/12 - By Jackie Radwanski

The star of the Auction - he sold for £900!

Utterly Horses Hullabaloo was held August 24-26 at the impressive National Stud in Newmarket, Suffolk, England, and was a total success! The UH Hullabaloo attracted hundreds of avid model horse collectors and horse lovers of all ages and abilities from all over the UK and Europe for three fun days of shopping, live showing, workshops, demos, and stud tours.

The Auction was one of the highlights of the three days with the Test Breyer ‘Sherlock' being sold for £900, the highest amount an OF Breyer in the UK has ever sold for! He was brought with a proxy bid by a collector in the USA. All the money raised at the auction is to be shared between three very worthwhile charities: The Riding for the Disabled, Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary and the Brooke Hospital.

A winning entry in the Newcomers Live Show

On each of the three days a raffle was held, the Saturday Raffle prize was a stunning Breyer SR Connoisseur ‘Mosaic' very kindly donated by Breyer- the very lucky winner was a lovely lady from Sweden who had only purchased three tickets!

There was also a Live Show held on each of the three days - a Newcomers Live on Friday, an Open Live Show on Saturday and the Julip Live on Sunday, all held in a large marquee. A three-hour thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon resulted in the marquee turning into a river, but a ‘Keep Calm & Carry On!' attitude was adopted as tables were hastily moved and the live show continued.

The Newcomers Live was a ‘sellout' with 40 young model horse collectors coming together to have a wonderful time showing some lovely models and learning all about live showing. The experienced judges took their time in explaining the placing and offering advice for the entrants. The standard of entries was very high and the judges had a hard time deciding the winnner.

Ffion Edgeley, who won the Newcomers Supreme Championship, said "There was an amazing atmosphere in the show tent, and everybody was really nice! It was really exciting to meet other people from around the country, who you wouldn't normally meet at other shows. I sat with a friend who had flown down from Scotland to be there! It was a fantastic feeling winning the Supreme Champion, and the glossy Ravel! I can't wait for next year!"

Entries at the Open Live Show were just incredible - the bar has been raised yet another level! Entries in the Performance classes looked so real you expected them to gallop right off the table with the riders waving to you as they went past. The Overall Open Live Supreme Show Champion was owned by Angela Docherty with the Reserve Supreme Champion owned by Sue Beard.

Section Champions in all three Live Shows received gold copies of ‘Union Jack,' the UH official show resin by Kelly Savage, with the Overall Champions receiving an OF SR Breyer glossy Ravel, donated by Breyer, in addition to huge rosettes.

Shopping was a major part of the event and the Utterly Horses shop didn't disappoint; collectors were spoilt for choice with many lovely examples of other brands of model horses. There were some real bargains to be had on the ‘end of line' and ‘secondhand/body quality' tables and the queue for the UH shop started very early on Friday morning.

Becky from UH organised a lovely collection of models owned by various collectors called ‘Galloping Through History' showcasing the many colours and styles of painting done by Breyer over the years. From Regular Runs to Special Run - Flockies to even a ‘Test Run', the line up featured some of the rarer models Breyer have produced. There was even a display of the different kinds of packaging used over the years!

One of the most popular places at the UHH was the Joan Westbrook Lecture Theatre as this is where the many demos, talks and workshops took place. Attendants learned everything from drawing a horse to making a saddle - even the parents were joining in and had great fun painting Breyer Stablemates and sculpting medallions along side their children.

There were so many other things available to do over the three days - competitions, quizzes, YouTube meets, Stablemates painting and sales rooms it was hard to keep track of it all. Entrants were also invited to attend one of the lovely National Stud tours of the stables and barns to see where the next generation of world class racehorses are bred and grow up. Seasoned stallions and well as fields of Thoroughbred yearlings all wanting cuddles were a huge hit with the crowd.

Bernadette Hughes, a model horse collector who attended the event from North Wales, said "I went for the shows mainly, but from what I heard about the workshops they were fun and informational about things like doing videos with your models, hosting shows, taking part in shows and tack making too. The Live shows, which were one of the main reasons I went, helped me get my confidence as the Newcomer's Live show was really well set out with a friendly atmosphere and people asked lots of questions and the classes ran smoothly. The amount of entrants were enough to keep the classes from getting too big and the joy when one of your horses won a ribbon brought smiles to people faces.

I would recommend anyone interested, but unsure of showing, to go and have some fun or just to come and have a look at how it all happens. My experience of UHH is that its a great event to help get people set up for doing more with their horses and hobby."

I can't wait to see you all next year. Plans for the Utterly Horses Hullabaloo 2013 are now underway!
