Our Second Kids Only Event at NJ Headquarters was Fun for All!

5/17/13

This past weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting our 2nd Kids Only Event at our NJ headquarters! Over 100 kids and their parents, family and friends joined us for tours of our offices. While the sun wasn't shining, the smiles on everyone's faces sure did light up the room!

The event kicked off with a Welcome Reception at our host hotel, the Crowne Plaza in Fairfield. As each kid bounced down the halls with excitement, Breyer's new Chalkboard Horse stopped them in their tracks! Getting a free model is always a great way to start things off! Inside even more surprises were waiting - a first-hand look at almost all of the BreyerFest models AND a peek at two new mid-year models, Trooper and Sam! We also played a really fun game - guess the number of Stablemates in the cookie jar! One great guess was right on the spot! 125 Stablemates managed to fit themselves into this little jar, great job Jennifer! Five more kids went home with raffle prizes before the night was over. We had a blast!

Saturday started off early as the buses dodged rain drops on the way to the offices. Two life-sized fiberglass horses complete with Breyer blankets and authentic tack welcomed guests at the Pequannock office. Staff toured the group around our Executive, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service offices. Along the way were six dioramas created for the World Equestrian Games and the New York Toy Fair, all incredible works of art created by 28 volunteers from across the model horse community. The Archive Room was a sight to see, and so were the guest's faces when they first entered! Row after row of model representing Breyer's long history filled the room. It is a collector's paradise! After the kids had their fill of model sight-seeing, two hobby experts, Jennifer Danza and Kristin Albert, began teaching workshops. The Painting workshop showed us that working with Stablemates scale models is a lot harder than it looks! But thankfully, Jenn brought along samples of her work from various points in her career to show it's not how you start but how you develop your painting skills that matters! Kristin Albert taught a very unique workshop called "My Dream Horse" using our Customizing craft kit. The kit includes two different colors of mohair (faux hair) that is applied to the models to create flowing manes and tails. It was a great to see the models coming to life!

The Wayne office offered a chance to see some more of the inner workings of Breyer models. The Paint Department took the group through each step of the painting process, from cleaning and prepping the unpainted model to a final product with markings, even a glossy coat! A few lucky guests had a chance to try their hand at dapples and eyes. It is really amazing how our very talented artists can create such beautiful models with what looks like just a few turns of their wrist. An actual mold used to create our models was also on display in Wayne. This was really neat! The kids had just heard from Stephanie Macejko, VP of Marketing, about how the models are made and then they got to see every step in person! Samples of almost every model we own are housed in our Sample Room - another amazing room FULL of shelves showing our long history of model making.

After taking in all the sights at the offices the buses met back up at the hotel for dinner. A Pony Party complete with Stablemates painting, coloring books and horse trivia rounded out the evening. Each person went home with even more gifts, a Classics Barrel Racing or Show Jumping set and a surprise Horse Crazy Stablemate! Plus, one lucky winner at each table one the centerpiece, a Traditional Model! We sure do hope everyone packed an extra bag for all their models and had as much fun as we did!

Intermittent - The only thing we sell with watercolor paints is our Watercolor Painting book (https://www.breyerhorses.com/watercolor_painting). All of our other craft kits come with acrylic paint. It sounds like your daughter may be applying the layers of paint too thickly, which would then require a longer drying time. We suggest consulting the instruction booklet that came with your kit for painting tips. Acrylic paint can be thinned out a bit with some water, which she may find helpful.

Watercolors??

Hello. My daughter recently bought a Breyer Paint kit that came with watercolors. She's having a hard time with the paint fully drying. Even waiting a day or two between coats....It seems to dry...but becomes sticky to the touch and somewhat rubs off (kind of like when you put your thumb in your nail polish before it has finished drying). Can anyone offer any suggestions for this?
Thank you!

Sure wish I was a kid again. ;) Thank you Breyer for sharing this great experience with us via the web. Any chance there will be an Adult's Too event in the future?
