Vintage Point Throwback Thursday!

10/1/2015

Versatile and people loving, the American Quarter Horse breed has established itself in many different sports, while remaining a family favorite and companion.

Sommer Prosser created the sculpture of the legendary Zippo Pine Bar in 1999. A legendary AQHA champion and 2000 inductee into the AQHA Hall of Fame, he was also an outstanding sire of multiple champions throughout his career at stud. Zippo Pine Bar was produced as model #466 and was discontinued in 2006.

The model is a matte chestnut with a right hind stocking and star-stripe on his face. A variation on the original Zippo Pine Bar was produced in a quantity of 30 as a 2004 BreyerFest live show prize, with the same color and markings and a special glossy finish.

At BreyerFest 1999, the volunteers received a very special gift model, a rare matte chestnut leopard Appaloosa model called Zeppelin.

Another highly sought after special run on this mold was created in 2000 for Just About Horses subscribers. Called "Confetti," the model is a stunning dark bay pinto produced in a matte finish with natural colored hooves and a bi-colored mane and tail. Limited to a run of 3000, collectors grabbed him up quickly.

With the induction of the Connoisseur series, Breyer created a whole new line of models for collectors, each limited to 350 pieces. The Zippo mold was issued fourth in the series in 2001. A stunning matte dun Appaloosa, complete with a dorsal stripe and leg bars, the model was dubbed "Quarterflash " and has a beautiful lacy blanket on his rump, black points and three socks. He also sports a star and stripe on his face.

In 2002, Zippo was again produced as an SR model. This time, he was available in a run of 2500 for Mid-States. Given the SR#701902, he was named "Shakopee." A beautifully shaded grey blanket Appaloosa with dark grey points and a blaze, he has airbrushed spots over an extensive blanket and stockings. Many variations exist in the size and amount of airbrushed spots.

The same year, QVC released a SR as an Artist's Proof Limited Edition Appaloosa Pleasure Horse. A remarkable matte sorrel Appaloosa with a lighter colored mane and tail, he wears a lacy blanket over his hindquarters with three stockings, a blaze, shaded muzzle, a hardwood base and brass plaque.

Returning to the regular run line for the year 2003 was model #1107, Zip's Chocolate Chip. A son of the legendary Zippo Pine Bar, Chip is a World Champion Western Pleasure Horse and a leading sire of Western Pleasure horses. Metallic undertones, socks, star, and striped hooves add to the appeal.

The same year, four glossy finished models were awarded to the champions of the BreyerFest Children and Youth Show.

The Black Tie Affair set was issued as a special run for JC Penney in 2004. Zippo returned as a black blanket Appaloosa stallion with a star, lacy blanket, and high front stockings. The attractive set included similarly colored Strapless and Amber models.

The year 2005 brought the Zippo mold back to the regular run line when he was released as a portrait model of another famous horse. Issued as #1166, Impress Me Shanon was the 1993 Appaloosa Horse Club World Champion 3 Year Old Stallion. A stunning matte chestnut Appaloosa with resist dappling and an extensive semi-leopard pattern, he has fast become a collector's favorite. A star and snip, eyewhites, striped hooves, and partial socks compliment his beautiful coloring. The model, like the real horse, has a small spot on his left ear, which has at times been mistaken by collectors for a factory flaw by collectors.

The real stallion, known for passing on his color and conformation to his foals, appeared as a special guest at BreyerFest 2005. Less than 30 glossy versions of this model were awarded as prizes at the BreyerFest Live Show.

In recent years, Breyer has held BreyerWest in California. As a gift to the 2006 volunteers, the Zippo model was made in a beautiful glossy bay overo pinto with grey hooves. "Atascadero", limited to 15 pieces, is quite a collector's dream!

The most recent addition to the regular run line came in 2007 as #1293, one of three "Picture Perfect" sets. It included a disposable camera, photo frame, potted plant, and instructional booklet. The Quarter Horse is a lovely shaded dun with dorsal stripe and leg bars, a blaze and snip, and chocolate points.

In 2007, BreyerFest 2007 honored Rugged Painted Lark as the Celebration Horse. As SR #711101, he was produced in a crisply masked bay tobiano pinto with a snip.

The real stallion is a son of another famous stallion also produced by Breyer, Rugged Lark. Nicknamed "Bruce," after the actor Bruce Willis, Rugged Painted Lark and owner Lynn Palm perform throughout the country Bruce did a memorable bridleless show at BreyerFest, featuring spins and canter pirouettes!

The Zippo Pine Bar model had been issued in many colors in his brief time as a Breyer mold. Versatile as many different stock breeds and a collector favorite at shows, there are many options yet to be explored.

Also enjoyed the article, and I love the mold, too.
For me, however, 1999 is not vintage. Showing my age here ;D
Nevertheless, I always appreciate the time put into these posts.
Many thanks,
