There's a lot of work and thought that goes into making a model like this. Below is an exclusive interview with Janet Simon, Vice President of Marketing, on the creation and development of this ornate model!

Breyer: What was the inspiration behind this model?

Janet: As a company, Breyer celebrates the spirit of the horse every day, and in all of the products we create. With 2012 being the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac, we thought that creating a Year of the Dragon Horse would be a beautiful way to express the two dynamic images together.

Breyer: What influenced the artwork that is on this model?

Janet: In Chinese astrology, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and fortune. The delicately detailed dragon that appears on this model was inspired by traditional Chinese gold lacquer artwork that is seen on porcelain and other antique collectibles.

Breyer:
Why was this model chosen to be crafted of porcelain?

Janet: Porcelain originated in China, and throughout Chinese history many fine items were crafted of this material, and still are today. The Year of the Dragon Horse was crafted of fine bisque porcelain as a nod to this model's Chinese influence.

Breyer: Can you tell us a little about the process that goes into the creation of a model like this?

Janet: We were fortunate to have a talented Chinese freelance artist here in the U.S., who has done great work for Breyer on other projects, create the finely detailed artwork that graces this model. This piece combines gold lacquer with beautiful colored pen and ink drawings and dragon imagery that illustrates the beauty and power of the Year of the Dragon. The combination of the beautiful horse sculpture with the traditional Chinese artwork makes for a beautiful commemorative edition to celebrate the Year of the Dragon!
