Summer Fun

by Traci Durrell-Khalife

The long, warm days of summer are the perfect time to have fun with horses. Our entrants really used their imaginations to capture images of their idea of summer fun. There were many trail rides, beach rides, and swimming scenes. Other popular activities were camping and picnics, as well as scenic shots of horses at liberty. A number of the riding scenes lacked bridles. While accomplished equestrians sometimes train their horse to ride bridleless, it's usually reserved for arena riding. A child riding a galloping steed bridleless down a beach, through a lake or over a log may seem romantic, but it's not a recipe for safety. Making a model bridle isn't difficult, and it's a lot of fun!

This picnic scene really caught my eye. Everything is in scale, the lighting is excellent, and the focus is sharp around the horse. The table is full of in-scale picnic foods. I like the way the young man is offering a lick of his ice cream cone to his horse. The horse even has a pink tongue! My only suggestion would be to trim the halter strap. Great job!

This is a very attractive composition. It's sharp, well-lit and uncluttered. The frolicking foals are certainly having fun! Cropping some of the bottom would put even more emphasis on the action.

I love the composition, lighting, and color scheme of this photo. The subject stands out well against the background, and it feels like a Fourth of July celebration. The rear cinch is too far back and needs a connector strap to the front cinch to keep it safely in position. Also, the bit could be waxed to the corner of the horse's mouth and the doll's foot positioned more carefully in the stirrup for added realism. The overall effect, however, is excellent.

This is a simple, yet attractive photo. Mares and foals are always fun to observe, especially in the wild. These Chincoteagues are right at home on a sandy beach with a foggy ocean behind them. Usually it's best to not cut off part of a model when framing the photo, but the cropping works well for this pony portrait.

It just doesn't get much better than camping in a meadow next to a lake. These horses look calm and suitable for trail riding. To improve this lovely scene, crop out some of the foreground grass and zoom in more on the subjects so we can better see what's going on.

Instead of the usual side view, this liberty scene shows a creative front view of horse and human. This was a perfect choice of horse with his neck turned looking in the girl's direction. And she's looking right at him. Her casual attire and warm vest are appropriate for a cool day at the beach. Seeing some sky could make this even better.

Photographing a night scene is challenging, but this was nicely done. The props are in scale and the temporary fence looks realistic for a camping situation. I like the lighting on the girl's face as she hands a treat to her horse. A lighter colored horse would show up better, and one who's looking down slightly would appear more attentive to the girl. Great job of making it look as if it's only lighted by the campfire!

BreyerFest is the epitome of summer fun with horses! This shot captures happy young hobbyists getting their picture taken with an equine celebrity, while proudly showing their new models. The mom in the background is even carrying a shopping bag full of models, while her daughter carries one. The details are great!

Good lighting, sharp focus and thoughtful composition bring this summer ride to life. The model is suitable for the task, and the dog slinking through the grass adds interest. The only suggestion would be for the rider to use two hands on the reins, as that's how a bosal is designed to be used. Beautiful photo!

This cute "postcard" scene makes me smile. The horses seem to be having fun, and I bet it was fun to set up, too. The pinto could be standing up straighter with his feet not so deep in the sand. Overall, it's quite clever!

Bright colors and sharp focus make this an eye-catching scene. The foreground sand blends well into the background. Getting a lower camera angle would make the horses seem more life-size. A more level ocean horizon would also be more pleasing. It's certainly a fun summer day at the beach!

As these girls know, going for a dip is a great way to cool down in summer. I like the choice of calm, standing models. The black horse's bridle fits nicely, but I'd prefer to see a bridle on the chestnut, as well. Closer cropping would make the horses appear more in scale to the lake. Great job capturing the reflections!

When school's out, there's more time to train your horses. This arena shot seems to be a liberty training session. The black horse could use a bit more light on its head, and the gray could be more attentive to his trainer. Use finer dirt footing to be more in scale to the horses. The background makes it quite realistic!
