Colorful Fall Trail Ride!

By Traci Durrell-Khalife

This month's theme of "Colorful Fall Trail Ride!" drew an impressive number of entries. There was an abundance of colorful autumn leaves, interesting lighting and creative angles. In addition to the usual side views, horses were photographed from the front and from the rear, either coming or going down the trail. Some entrants even took a shot as if riding the last horse, looking toward the others out front.

For a pleasurable trail ride, horses and riders should be outfitted in safe, comfortable, and appropriate tack and attire. Using schooling equipment is fine, as there are no show rules to follow. The tack should be in scale and properly adjusted. Some entrants went the extra mile and added saddlebags, canteens and other accessories that might come in handy while trail riding. Several entrants included two horses and riders, which is an excellent idea. It's safer - and much more fun! - to ride with a friend.

Be careful to keep the background and setting in scale. Large leaves or rocks can give away your model's size. Shooting down will also dwarf your model, so hold the camera lens approximately even with the horse's withers. Unfortunately, some horses were disqualified because there was no rider in the picture. Please read the contest rules carefully! Some photos were exceptionally creative in lighting or composition, but lacked accuracy or the fall colors aspect of the theme. The winning photos strike a harmonious balance of creativity, composition, lighting, accuracy and theme. They sure put me in the mood to go hit the trail myself!

And the winners are:

1st Place

Kayla L., ME

I love how this photo captures the theme. The background trees in their autumn glory are reflected in the lake. The lighting is great, the horse is in focus, and the tack fits well. The chaps will protect the rider's legs from bushes when he rides through the woods. Great job!

2nd Place

Joyce S., OH

This rider is prepared for a long day on the trail with her backpack, binoculars, saddle pouches, and water bottle. She's also wearing a safety helmet, which is a great addition to the setup. Her horse stands quietly while she consults her map and compass. This delightful scene has lots of details. Well done!

3rd Place

Dayna S., OH

These easy-going horses would be a pleasure to ride outdoors. Shorter grass would improve the scale, but the colors and composition are very pleasing. Snug up and raise the breast collar for a better fit. The lead rope tied around the palomino's neck is a plus. Great job outfitting two horses and riders!

4th Place

Maddie K., MS

This is a wonderfully realistic trail ride scene, from the dirt road to the playful dogs. The sun's glow brings out the colors in the background. The tack is correctly adjusted and appropriate for English riders. The boots on the gray horse are a nice detail. Cropping off some of the foreground would put even more emphasis on the horses.

5th Place

Sarah M., IN

I was impressed by the thoughtful perspective in this photo, as if taken while astride the last horse in line. The trail surface looks very realistic, is an appropriate width, and continues toward the forest. Good job of leaving a safe space between the horses, too!

6th Place

Mary H., MN

This couple seems to be coming to a clearing in the woods. The trees are in scale and in full autumn colors. This setup would be even better if the tack were more carefully adjusted, such as the buckskin's bit being right on the corner of the mouth and the reins hanging down smoothly. Good use of a creative angle on two colorful horses!

Honorable Mentions

Jenna Z., IL

This is another unusual perspective on a trail ride. I can't see much of the tack, but I can see that the riders are impeccably dressed and sitting well on their horses. Although the leaves are a bit too large, the straw bale and pumpkins are in scale and in keeping with the theme.

Leah H., OH

This is a really clear, bright photo. The rider is equipped with a canteen, saddlebags and bedroll. The bridle fits well. However, the rear cinch needs a connector strap to the front cinch to prevent it from slipping too far back, which would be a big safety issue with a real horse. The grass and leaves could be in better scale, but the trees turning golden give it the feel of a crisp autumn day.
