Breyer Photo Show October 2016 - Results!

The Spookiest Time of Year!

Judge: Silke Brockmoeller

I just LOVE Halloween and was very excited to have the opportunity to judge the October online show! We had many wonderful entries and so many great photos from which to choose. The theme was "Spookiest Time of the Year", so in my initial review, I focused on what was the spookiest, or scariest, or gee... I do not want to be there on a dark and lonely night! There were quite a few haunted houses, Headless Horsemen, and creepy old cemeteries, all places and things that are spooky, and keeping with the theme.

In judging these entries, I focused on creativity, skill and accuracy. One big thing to remember for ANY photo show, regardless of the theme, is to be aware of scale. Make sure everything in your photo is in scale with each other. Are the trees and fences accurate for the height of the horse? Would the tombstones in a cemetery be close to the right size? Even little details like trees, bushes, grass and leaves can really make a good photo awesome, if in scale with the rest of the scene.

Another important factor when I judge any model class is what I call my ability to "connect," or make "eye contact" with the subject, in this case, the model horse. Make your photo more realistic by trying to take the pictures at the eye level of the horse, so all the subjects in the photo are also to scale. That can make a good photo even better. There were some really amazing photos in the contest that certainly did that. Some photos taken from too high up did not give me the sense of being "in the scene" and would have had a much better overall effect if they had taken a little lower. Don't be afraid to try different things! Remember, the judge will never see you lying in the grass to get "up close and personal" with your spooky set-up!

And the Winners are!

Wow, everything is just terrific in this photo: excellent use of the Breyer model, the scale of the trees, the cobblestone path, the pumpkins! Everything is right in place for this entry. Plus, it was spooky! Great job!

2nd Place

Beautiful haunting entry! The horse really looks like a ghost! In this case, less was more with this simple, elegant (and spooky!) entry. The lighting effect on the model really achieves a ghost-like quality!

3rd Place

Kayla L., ME

Overall, a very nice entry: the horse, fence, and tombstones are all very much in scale with each other. I love the road sign too! I wish it were a touch lighter, but with the white horse, it is still a lovely entry.

4th Place

A simple yet elegant photo. The blurry background is a nice touch and the rocks and moss are very well-placed and real looking. The hooded figure looks like it is searching for something in an enchanted wood.

5th Place

Lana M., CO

I like the perspective on this photo....knowing the horses are Stablemates scale, yet the photo is presented at "eye level" of the two rearing stallions. It's a very neat set-up with the haunted horse spooking the delivery horse. Well done!

6th Place

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorite Halloween stories! The rider on this horse is terrific! The only thing that could have made this photo place higher was if the rider looked more like it was holding the reins, and if the grass were a tad shorter. It's a little out of scale, but overall a great photo. The horse is lit very well, not too dark!

I LOVE the overall look and feel of this photo. It has a very vintage and spooky look to it! This may have placed a bit higher if I could see more of the horse. The leaves are a bit large, but the pumpkins and tombstones are great!

Honorable Mention #2

This is just a fun, well-done photo. I like the little mini horse in the pumpkin, it has a shadowbox feel to it, and looks like it may just run right out on the mist.
