A BreyerFest Military Tribute

From raptors to the Military, Jeff Wilson and his trio of Morgan Stallions kept the entire arena audience on their toes. His captivating performances were one of our biggest hits this year and we are pleased to have had the opportunity to share his talents with the Breyer world.

Possibly the most eye catching part of his performance were the intricate clippings on each of his stallions done by Dana Boyd, a professional horsewoman and body clipping specialist. The Military logos clipped into the coat of Orion, were by far the most remarkable and added the final touch to Jeff Wilson's tribute to the United States Military.

According to Dana Boyd, the picture first appeared on Orion back in 2012 and she swore she would never do it again simply because of the intricacy and accuracy the design required. But three and a half years later BreyerFest 2016 was looming and never came calling. Dana spent three days on Orion, perfecting the design for the tribute. The design is clipped into the horse's hair using a stencil. The first edition of all of Dana's designs are clipped on her mare and then recreated on other horses, but this design belongs exclusively to Orion.

"When Jeff called and explained how special BreyerFest is, I agreed to clip this one more time.  My husband I both have decided this picture belongs only to Orion.  It definitely will not be clipped on any other horse, and, I am at his point, not sure it will be re-clipped on him. The Morgan horse is America's horse and the picture is 100% American."

Jeff Wilson was quoted on the clipping in an article by WKYT, "I've had a lot of veterans get really emotional when they see it. There's just something special about seeing these logos on the horse."

The tribute touched our hearts and above all honored our veterans in a way that was truly unique. We want to send a special thank you to Jeff Wilson and Dana Boyd for sharing their talents with our Breyer community.

BreyerFest 5K Deemed a Success!

As many of you already know, we had our first annual BreyerFest 5K this year! Despite the Kentucky heat and humidity, there were around 450 runners ready to race bright and early on Sunday morning. We are thrilled with the turn out and want to thank everyone for helping us raise money to benefit the retired Thoroughbreds of Old Friends, a very deserving cause. Time to start training for next year!

Carnival Beneficiaries and Raffles

Whether you're a serious Breyer collector searching for the next Holy Grail or a family in search of a fun weekend, BreyerFest is all about celebrating our shared love for horses and creating memories to last a lifetime! Not only is the weekend full of fun but it's also rewarding. Every year, BreyerFest helps us donate to a handful of amazing beneficiaries and you all help make that possible.

This year we had the pleasure of supporting six remarkable organizations: the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the 4H Eastern and Western Round-Ups, the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), The Cloud Foundation and JustWorld International. Not only were we able to raise money for these charities through our live and silent auctions, but also with the Saturday and Sunday Benefit Raffles! This year's models included Cinza and Areia.

For the first time ever, BreyerFest offered its thrilling Celebration of Horses evening performance on both Friday and Saturday nights. Hosting packed houses both evenings at the Alltech Arena, this year's Celebration of Horses was produced by crowd favorites, KYB Dressage. In addition to performances by KYB Dressage, the evening also featured Sylvia Zerbini's Grand Liberty Act, Jeff Wilson's Cowboy Dressage and Birds of Prey, Gudmar Petursson's Knights of Iceland, Dan James of Double Dan Horsemanship, and the Majestic Friesians (who definitely snuck in some unicorns).

Guests were greeted each evening by a real taste of Rio's Carnival celebration, brought to BreyerFest by drum and dance troupe Samba New York!

Samba New York! at the Alltech Arena

Both nights featured carnival games and circus performers, hosted by Cincinnati Circus, who entertained guests with stilt walkers and games before the evening's performances and during intermission. Saturday night, participants strutted their stuff in the annual costume contest, which was kicked off by a performance from Samba New York! and featured a variety of its own Samba dancers and other Brazilian-themed costumes.

This year, KYB Dressage's performances included their interpretations of The Wizard of Oz, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and The Lion King each complete with outstanding costumes, plus a special performance of the Man from Snowy River with Dan James. The Knights of Iceland wowed audiences with two daring precision performances, both of which featured fire! Jeff Wilson's "The Sport of Kings and Cowboys" dressage demonstrations with birds of prey transported audiences though the ages. And Sylvia Zerbini inspired the audience with her beautiful, dancing Arabian horses, displaying her intense connection with the animals.

BreyerFest Carnival Guest Horses

This year, BreyerFest attendees got to meet hundreds of horses, including our Guest Horses: Arabian stallion Magic Elixir, the son of Rhapsody in Black; Friesian Stallions Nitrous and Dolci Vita, who are featured in the upcoming film Albion: The Enchanted Stallion; the adorable Miniature Donkey Hickory Hills Wall Street; Appaloosa Heritage Champion Lil' Ricky Rocker; International Working Equitation Champion, Diablo DC; Icelandic Stallion Svali Frá Tjörn; Jeff Wilson's Morgan Stallions with their beautiful, military-inspired clippings; and BreyerFest 2016's Celebration Horse, the Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador.

As many fans may be aware, the Mangalarga Marchador stallion Imperador das Aguas JM, the 2016 Celebration Horse, was unable to make it to BreyerFest due to illness, but owner Claudia Bellandi of C&C Bellandi Managlarga Marchador brought a few of his stable mates, including the mare Irana das Aguas JM and the stallion Lendario das Aguas JM, as representatives of this wonderful breed.

All weekend long, guests stopped by the stables to chat with owners and spend some time with these celebrity equines. As expected, Hickory Hills Wall Street, or "Wally" to his adoring fans, stole the show. At only 30.5" tall, this Grand Champion Donkey was more than happy to pose for photos and be showered with attention.

All our guest horse owners were happy to sign models and greet collectors, who lined up for hours each day to make sure they got their photo taken with their favorite horses.

Of the 1600 total models there were 800 glossy models and 800 matte models. We can't decide which lovely lady is our favorite as she's beautiful in both finishes!

Imperador das Aguas JM will not attend BreyerFest

(Lexington, KY - July 20, 2016) -- Breyer announced today that Imperador das Aguas JM, the 2016 BreyerFest Celebration Horse, will not attend BreyerFest Carnival this week.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce today that Imperador das Aguas JM will not be able to attend BreyerFest Carnival 2016." said Jaime Potkalesky, BreyerFest's manager. The grey Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador stallion was taken ill last week. In the intervening days, his veterinary team determined that Imperador was showing signs of laminitis and they have been taking aggressive action to keep the stallion comfortable. Though his condition appears to be stable at the moment, Imperador will not be able to attend BreyerFest.

Imperador das Aguas JM

"We are very grateful that Imperador's owner C&C Bellandi - Mangalarga Marchador is in a position to send Imperador's stable mates to BreyerFest in his place. We also send our very best wishes to them in this difficult time," said Potkalesky.

"Of course we are incredibly disappointed that Imperador will miss BreyerFest," said Claudia Bellandi, owner of C&C Bellandi - Mangalarga Marchador at Oak Bell Farm. "But Imperador's health is our main concern at this point. I will be bringing some of Imperador's stablemates, the stallion Lendario das Aguas JM and mare Irana days Aguas JM, both imported from Imperador's home Fazenda das Aguas JM in Brazil, to BreyerFest to help spread the word about this wonderful breed. I am grateful that BreyerFest guests are horse people and understand the challenge that Imperador is facing. It feels good to know that thousands of people will be sending good thoughts his way."

BreyerFest Carnival will take place July 22-24 at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY. For additional information, please visit our website at Single day tickets for BreyerFest and tickets for the BreyerFest Celebration of Horses evening spectacular (held Friday and Saturday evenings, July 22 & 23 at 6:00 pm at the Alltech Arena) are available for sale on site at the BreyerFest Ticket Booth and at the Alltech Arena ticket booth prior to the show each evening.

Meet Tiki Kulp!

Tiki Kulp, 17, is one of our younger faces at BreyerFest Carnival, and she has talent that exceeds her years! We're excited to feature her in our Artisans' Gallery and BreyerFest Marketplace this year.

Tiki's story begins four years ago when her Grandpa was searching for some help making harnesses, carts, buggies and the like for his online business. While none of his Grandsons were interested, Tiki was eager to step up to the job! As a young girl, she was never much into horses but she was intrigued by anything artistic. Her Grandpa's business was exactly that! So on January 2nd, 2012 Tiki went to work for her Grandpa. Since, she has exceeded her own expectations by creating anything her Grandpa had and then some. She will be taking the business over from him after she turns 18 in October. Not only will she carry on her Grandpa's legacy, but she'll also being following in her Dad's footsteps. Her Dad started his own business when he was around Tiki's age, and was able to mold it into something that is still successful today. Tiki hopes to do the same and looks forward to the opportunity of growing the business throughout her life, whether it simply be a hobby or something more!

For Tiki the most enjoyable part of her business is making the harnesses, "I like doing things that are repetitive and don't take much thought. Whereas the model vehicles I haven't made as many of them, so I'm always figuring it out as I go along." Out of all the different harnesses she makes the Budweiser harness (pictured) is her favorite. Although the process of putting it together is always a challenge, she says that's exactly what makes it so rewarding in the end.

A challenge is clearly no match for Tiki! Even when making the most difficult products, model vehicles, Tiki is able to bring them to life. She let us in on her secret to getting them just right, "When making a small model of something, there's no way you can get all the detail in the smaller item.  You have to pick and choose the most critical parts.  Once you decide on the critical parts that need to be in the model you need to figure out how to make them look good."

With so many products out there, you may wonder how she is able to continue to bring new things into her product line. She thanks her customers for that! They are always requesting something new and, while she has some brilliant ideas of her own swirling through her head, her customers always come first!

Tiki aspires to get her name out into the model horse world and BreyerFest is the perfect opportunity! She and her Grandpa had talked about attending BreyerFest for years, but never dreamed that it would be in the cards so soon. Last summer Tiki set her mind to it and made it happen! "I didn't see anything holding me back. I immediately started researching what it would take to get in. I soon figured out what I needed to do, I talked with a few friends to see if they would like to join me to help out. The friends that I thought were most interested in joining me to help me out for the weekend all seemed to be busy, or didn't know their schedules so far in advance. I then decided that I should probably let my parents know that I was planning to do this. I asked them, the same day they decided to go with me to help me out!" With her families support Tiki continued to pursue her goal, and in a few short weeks she'll be able to check it off her list!

We asked Tiki what she is most excited for about BreyerFest, "I'm most excited/anxious for how BreyerFest will turn out. Always when you go to something new, you don't know how well your product will do there. I'm very curious to see the turnout, and learn what products I'll need more of for the following years." With talent like Tiki's we think she'll be a big hit this year, and we can't wait for you all to meet her! You can get a sneak peek at her products on her website!

You can find Tiki in the BreyerFest Marketplace all weekend long and in the Artisans' Gallery at the Clarion Hotel Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.

June 20, 2016

This year we are excited to welcome an entirely new breed of guest to our BreyerFest stage: Raptors.

Notoriously known as a Bird of Prey, their keen vision and powerful talons and beaks make them born hunters. With wing spans that can range to up to several feet, they have the ability to soar over great distances. Lorrie Schumacher, Master Falconer and founder of Talons! A Bird of Prey Experience has teamed up with Jeff Wilson to bring you an original performance combining the strength and athleticism of the Morgan horse breed with the intelligence and power of the raptor.

Falconry has been around for 3,000 years. Back then, the birds were less of a form of entertainment and more of a means of survival. Man had no choice but to hunt for their next meal and the supreme hunting skills of the Falcon made that a little bit easier. And so the symbiotic relationship was born. It wasn't until the time of the kings and knights that Falconry became a sport.

As a creature with a mind of their own, you might wonder how the birds can be trained. The falconer is never truly in control... the birds are, but they can be "trained" through rewarding desired behaviors with a treat. Lorrie's tasty treat of choice for her birds is Quail. We asked Lorrie about the most enjoyable part about working with the birds. "The Birds are in control. I can 'train' them by giving them a reason/a tweak to be a part of my life, to give them a new experience every day. They have taught me humility, respect, consistency, empathy and that I am not in control," she said, "The birds teach me something new every day, they humble me. I'm a school gal in their presence."

Lorrie and her raptors have performed at a variety of different venues over the years, Central Park and The Cloisters to name a couple, but they have never shared the stage with horses. BreyerFest will be the very first! In anticipation for upcoming performance Lorrie shared with us why it is so unique, "This is bringing the sports of Kings - Horsemanship and Falconry - together as they have been for the past 1,000 years. The Sport of Kings. Two Supreme Beings - Raptors and Horses. So Supreme to Humans. We can only admire them and worship how they can learn to work together."

Jeff Wilson and the Raptors will perform in the Covered Arena during the Equine Showcase daily from July 22nd through July 24th. Don't miss your chance to see this one-of-a-kind performance!

Let’s meet Robin Briscoe, the BreyerFest volunteer manager!

Robin Briscoe has been working with the Breyer team for over ten years as our volunteer manager of various locations not related to the shows. Prior to that, she was a volunteer who assisted several activities at Breyerfest, including the Hobby Information Booth and photographing events and attendees. Robin has presented several seminars at BreyerFest in past years, including Herd Your Horses and Combined Driving 101. Robin started collecting Breyers back in the mid 1970’s and it helped to fuel her love of horses and other animals. Collecting has also taught her a lot about organization and record keeping and BreyerFest has allowed her to spend time with people who have become the best of friends. She also enjoys visiting all the horses, museums and BBQ places in and around the Kentucky Horse Park. When not working on BreyerFest preparations, she is a certified veterinary technician who currently works for an animal nutrition company after working for over 20 years at a small animal veterinary hospital in Massachusetts. She spends her time at home in New Hampshire with her fiancé Rick and their three cats. Robin says that she is looking forward to meeting old and new volunteers in Kentucky in July!

You've seen updates about Cloud and his herd on our Facebook page and we're thrilled to welcome Ginger Kathrens and The Cloud Foundation back to BreyerFest!

As you may already now, a very special foal was born in the Pryor Mountains of Montana on May 29th, 1995. Immediately filmmaker Ginger Kathrens knew this was a special horse. Ginger is now an Emmy® award winner and Cloud is an ambassador for all of America's mustangs living on public lands. So much has changed in the past 20 years.

Ginger has followed Cloud's herd since before his birth and has witnessed what life is like for wild horses in the Pryor Mountains for the past two decades. The pale palomino stallion has always been released when rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) because of his rare color. Many of his family members have not been as lucky and have been removed by the BLM through helicopter stampedes or bait trapping. Cloud has been documented in three films, "Cloud: Wild Stallions of the Rockies," "Cloud's Legacy: The Wild Stallion Returns," and "Cloud: Challenge of the Stallions," which aired on the PBS Nature series.

Cloud's incredible story and Ginger's hard work and vision have made Cloud so much more than what was ever though possible. The Cloud Foundation grew out of Ginger's passion for the preservation of wild horses and protection of Cloud's herd. The non-profit organization is dedicated to preventing the extinction of Cloud's herd through education, media events and programming, and public involvement. In 2011, Congress declared Cloud an ambassador for all wild horses living in the American West. He has been honored over the years with lots of Breyer models and sets. Our current set, Cloud's Encore, is available on our website.

Ginger will be giving a seminar about her experiences documenting Cloud and his herd. See photos and videos of Cloud's newest family members and learn more about the plight of the mustangs, and what we can do to help!

Some people think Friday the 13th is an unlucky date. Simba du Pont de Tournay, our BreyerFest 2015 Vive La France Celebration Horse, might have a different opinion of this superstitious date.

simba colt colt 2

Simba became a dad again last Friday, the 13th, when Gia (who was at BreyerFest with him) foaled a big, healthy colt. Tentatively called Sherman as he's build like a tank, this little guy is heavy boned and stocky like his parents. Owner, Joyce Conklin, said the colt appears to be a bay roan, like Simba with a few white hairs on his forehead.

Welcome to the Breyer Family Sherman!

After hearing the amazing story of Aimé Tschiffely and the faithful Mancha and Gato we knew we had to make them into Breyer models! How could we not honor such an amazing feat?

So meet Mancha and Gato, the models!

Mancha and Gato

Mancha means the Spotted One and was an 18 -year-old red and white piebald when Aimé first met them on the pampas of Argentina. Gato, also known as the Cat, was a 16-year-old buckskin dun. Both models depict the horses as they were Aimé first met them and before they set out on their odyssey across countless countries.

As Tschiffely described the horses, ‘they were the wildest of the wild' and would try and kick any one that came near them; in fact neither one of them had seen a stable before their journey!

trail 1 trail 2

Following their marathon adventure, Mancha and Gato were retired to an estancia. Tschiffely returned to Argentina during World War II to visit his old friends, who had been running wild on the pampas since their return. Gato passed away first, at the age of 32, in 1944 and Mancha was 37 when he died in 1947.

Mancha and Gato will be available at the Breyer Mercado at BreyerFest Carnival!

May 17, 2016

While researching Rio, Brazil, and South America we came across the fascinating story of Aimé Tschiffely and his two horses, Mancha and Gato. We were so amazed by the courageous journey all three undertook we wanted to share it with you today.

In 1925 Aimé Tschiffely, a Swiss teacher living in Argentina, set out on an epic ride with two Criollo horses, Mancha and Gato. The amateur explorer's goal was to travel ten thousand miles from Buenos Aires to Washington, DC, over some of the world's most inhospitable country. Their odyssey lasted two and a half years, forced horses and rider to survive through near-impossible conditions, and ended with a hero's welcome at the White House.

It also made Tschiffely the greatest Long Rider of the 20th century.

Mancha (the Spotted One) was an 18 -year-old red and white piebald and Gato (the Cat) was a 16-year-old buckskin dun. Both horses were owned by a Patagonian Indian and were unbroken and running free on the pampas of Argentina when they were brought down to a local estancia, what we call a ‘ranch' in the US. As Tschiffely described the horses, ‘they were the wildest of the wild' and would try and kick any one that came near them; in fact neither one of them had seen a stable before their journey! Over time the half-wild horses adapted and grew fond of Tschiffely.

During their three-year journey, the trio travelled approximately twenty miles a day through mud-holes, over quicksand bogs and across rivers through extreme hot and cold temperatures. They trekked high into the mountains of Bolivia at altitudes of 11,000 feet. They continued through the steep, rocky terrain of the Andes and the jungle valleys of Peru to Ecuador and Colombia. In Mexico, Gato went lame and Tschiffely shipped the horse to Mexico City to await his arrival. Mancha and Tschiffely continued along the way, finally reaching Mexico City where they were reunited with Gato. After this, they crossed into the US at Laredo, Texas where they were guests of the Texas Rangers. They rode through Oklahoma, the Ozarks, and on to St. Louis, crossed the Mississippi River and continued over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Before they reached Washington, DC an American motorist took deliberate aim at them, hit Mancha and sped away. Luckily the tough Criollo was unhurt and all three made it to the White House, where they received a hero's welcome from President Coolidge and the National Geographic Society.

Tschiffely decided to ship Mancha and Gato to New York, in order to keep the horses safe from traffic on the roads. The two horses and their rider were greeted in New York with a full ticker-tape parade, the only one granted to a Long Rider. Tschiffely also received a New York City medal from Mayor James Walker. After their long journey, horses and rider travelled back to Buenos Aires by ship, arriving in Argentina almost three years to the day from their departure.

Tschiffely and his horses' legacy continues today: the Argentinean Congress passed a law in 1999 declaring September 20th of each year as ‘Día Nacional Del Caballo' (National Day of the Horse), as this was the date Aimé arrived in New York in 1928. The book Tschiffely's Ride has sold more copies than any other equestrian travel tale in history and has inspired five generations to get in the saddle and head for the horizon.

BreyerFest Carnival is thrilled to welcome JustWorld International to BreyerFest and the Kentucky Horse Park this July! As you might have already seen or read, JustWorld will be running our horseless horse show in Celebration Park. They are also one of BreyerFest Beneficiaries this year!

JustWorld International is devoted to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding local partners around the world helping children thrive. While many nonprofit organizations focus primarily on providing short-term assistance to developing countries, JustWorld's goals are long term.

Since its inception in 2003, JustWorld has strived to work with grassroots, community-based organizations that have evolved to help children who often fall beyond the reach of government and large-scale humanitarian programs.
Through partnerships with organizations in Cambodia, Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras JustWorld supports over 6,000 children in need. With a focus on education, nutrition, health and hygiene and cultural development programs JustWorld empowers a generation to lift themselves out of poverty.

JustWorld International's Horseless Horse Show is one of the organizations creative fundraisers. A horseless horse show is run just like a real horse show except without horses. With set jumping courses participants race against the clock on his or her own two feet. The Horseless horseshow is open to all ages and features a "Grand Prix" a "Pairs Class" and is followed by the crowd favorite, "High Jump Competition". All sections will be judged and an awards presentation will follow each section of competition. The shows will be held daily at 10am and 2pm and participants must be a children's ticket holder.

We hope our BreyerFest kids start practicing their jumps and we hope to see everyone cheering each other on in Celebration Park!

You can read more about JustWorld's horseless horse show and the full rules here.

Meet Chesna Klimek, from Olympia, Washington!

We have another Working Equitation rider to introduce you to. Don't' forget to scroll down to revisit our blog posts about Working Equitation and to meet the other Working Eq riders.

Klimek 1 klimek 2

Chesna Klimek, a native to Washington state, has been training, competing, and performing with horses since childhood. A dedicated three-day eventer, Chesna studied and competed as a working student in England with top professionals and has shown her own young horses in horse trials in the United States.

klimek 3

In 2010, Chesna and her self-trained Haflinger pony, Pippin, were the United States Eventing Association Training Level Champions in the Pacific Northwest. Together, they have also competed successfully in show jumping over 3'6" courses, earned a USDF silver medal Prix St. Georges, and won versatility events such as the Extreme Cowboy Race and All Breed Challenge.

In 2013, Chesna won Emerald Downs' 100-day Trainer Challenge for ex-racehorses with a 7 year old off-the-track Thoroughbred named Solar, in part thanks to their bridleless freestyle performance.

klimek 4

In 2015, Chesna and Pippin began studying Working Equitation, ending their first Working Equitation show season by winning the Intermediate Level National Champion title at Haras Cup against competitors from across the US, and even two top riders from Portugal, the country that consistently dominates the sport world-wide. She and Pippin continue to advance their skills in Working Equitation with the goal of one day riding at the top level of the sport.

Chesna is also a contributing writer to Eventing Nation. You can learn more about Chesna on her website. You can also watch some of her performances on YouTube.

And last but not least, our Breakables Show Manager, Maggie Schneider Barkovitz!

Breakables Show Manager, Maggie Schneider Barkovitz is a Philadelphia native, even though she now lives in Missouri, and is about to move to Phoenix, Arizona. Maggie started collecting Breyers around 1977 after being introduced to them by her friend & neighbor. When she was a kid, all she wanted for Christmas and birthdays were Breyers. She would circle the ones she wanted in the catalog, and hand them to her mom, grandparents, or anyone else who she thought might like to know.

In 1991 she stopped collecting until 1998 when she bought her first computer, got online, and did a search for Breyer. Lo and behold she discovered a vast hobby she didn't even know about as a kid. Through the old Cascade Model Horse board, she connected with people, one of whom is one of her dearest friends to this day. That friend introduced her to the ceramic model horse hobby, and she's been collecting chinas ever since, with a Breyer or two here and there!

In 2002 BreyerFest featured the very first Breakables show with show hostess Karen Gerhardt. It was an opportunity for collectors to bring out their ceramic horses and be a part of the largest gathering of model horse enthusiasts in the country. In 2008 Maggie, with Karen's blessing, approached Breyer about reviving the show since many of the china collectors also collect Breyers and attend BreyerFest. Since then, Breakables Live at BreyerFest has been a Thursday night fixture at BreyerFest's host hotel - the Clarion.

Next up, our Youth and Children’s Show Managers, Eleanor Harvey and Kim Bjorgo-Thorne!
Kim Bjorgo-Thorne

Kim Bjorgo-Thorne started her collection of Breyers with a pair of woodgrain models given to her by her mother. Rumor has it that she wasn't all that impressed with her new baby sister, and that the models were an attempt to redirect her energy. Those woodgrain models went everywhere- to the beach, in the pool, the yard, etc. As Kim's carpet herd grew she learned about the model horse hobby and Just About Horses. She attended her first live show at a local hobbyist's house at age 12, and 6 years later, held her first "live" show. Fast forward through college and graduate school, and Kim is still active with the model horse hobby. She holds a show every year in Columbus, Ohio and participates in several online model horse-related communities. Kim has attended all but the first two BreyerFests. Her collection is an eclectic mix of Breyer clinky models, and a few draft breed artist resins.

Kim has ridden hunter jumpers and three-day horses since she was seven, but the draft breeds hold her heart. She is a lifetime member of the Clydesdale Breeders of the USA. In "real life", Kim is a professor at a small liberal arts college, where she teaches vertebrate zoology, ecology, and environmental-related courses. Her advanced work is in fisheries biology and spatial ecologist, and considers horses her avocation rather than vocation. Kim also works with the local 4-H equestrian group and teaches about horse form and function. Through life's ups and downs, successes and triumphs, the one constant in Kim's life has been the model horse hobby, and she finds great fulfillment through the deep and lasting friendships made as a result of the hobby.

Eleanor Harvey

Eleanor Harvey began collecting model horses after years of pleas for a real pony fell on deaf ears. Her parents caved and gave her a glossy dapple grey Running Mare, only to watch in disbelief as she grew the herd to its present state, numbering over 2000 models. She did finally begin riding horses in Virginia when she was 9 years old, and eventually rode hunter paces and combined training in Connecticut on a Welsh pony named Buster, and progressed to second level dressage under Elizabeth Madlener at Maryland Horse Center. Her riding career went on hold as graduate school, marriage, a career, and two kids absorbed most of her time; but the model horse hobby became a more important part of her life, and through the hobby she has made some of her closest friends. She began showing and judging model horses in the 1980s. Her specialties are English performance, harness, and collectibility. She has attended most Breyerfests since 1993, and judged the Children and Youth shows for many years before becoming co-manager of the shows with her good friend, Kim Bjorgo-Thorne. When she's not playing with her model horses Eleanor is an art museum curator in Washington, DC, where she organizes exhibitions and writes books about American art.

Meet our BreyerFest Model Horse Show Managers!

Michelle Masters, Open Show Manager

First up, Open Show Manager, Michelle Masters!

Michelle Masters has been managing the BreyerFest Open Show since 2006, but has been collecting Breyers for much longer. In fact, Michelle got her first Breyer model horse from her aunt when she was seven. In the last 45-odd years she's collected 300 O.F. Breyer models as well as special runs and event models. She got her model horse show start when she attended her first ‘live' show in 1975. She's been to countless shows since then! Michelle first attended BreyerFest in 1993 and impressively she's only missed two years since then! Michelle attended ten years of BreyerFest with all three of my daughters, who also collect model horses and have shown in many shows.

Michelle started out as a judge at BreyerFest, then moved on to teach the Showing and Performance clinics before being asked to take over as show manager for the Open Show in 2006. Michelle considers her duties as show manager a true labor of love as it combines her love of organizing and planning with her life-long love of the model horse hobby.

Michelle is very busy year round with her job as an 8th grade English teacher, so of course she can't get enough books! Michelle also adores her three dogs and the beach, and loves jigsaw puzzles, playing volleyball, and attending Renaissance festivals.

Meet one of Store Specials, Dag Dia!

Dag Dia is a powerful black Friesian horse and the star of the upcoming film, Albion: The Enchanted Stallion. Dag Dia whisks Evie Flynn, a lonely young girl from Vermont, to the magical world of Albion. Here, she discovers that she is the key to saving an entire race of people – and, she uncovers the truth about Dag Dia. Is he a kelpie, the legendary shape-shifting water beast that some in Albion claim him to be, or is he simply her benevolent guide and protector?

Dag Dia of the upcoming film Albion: The Enchanted Stallion

Dag Dia is brought to life by majestic trick stallions Nitrous and Hans of Majestic Friesians (, who filmed in their home state of Michigan, then traveled to Bradenton, Florida before being flown to Bulgaria for 2 months of principal photography. Nitrous and Hans are expertly trained and handled by Ashley Klein and are owned by David, Hailey, Hanna and Lori Brock. The stallions took to acting like pros, with Hans handling the scenes where Dag Dia needed to be aggressive, rearing or striking, and Nitrous appearing in virtually every scene of the movie (when he wasn’t running around loose on set stealing cake from the crew).

Dag Dia is presented on the Kathleen Moody sculpted-Gypsy Vanner mold (#723) with braided mane. This limited edition Store Special will be available in the Breyer Store during BreyerFest and does not require a special ticket. Quantities are limited; however, models will be made available each day. Limit one per person.

Be sure to catch Nitrous and Hans as Dag Dia in Albion: The Enchanted Stallion, coming Fall 2016.

Meet Wally! We know he's going to steal the show at BreyerFest Carnival!

This show-stopping Miniature Donkey jack was born in 2013, and he's been winning big since he was a yearling. While small in stature, his looks and presence demand attention! Standing 30 1/2" tall, he sports a beautiful red coat with garters (striping) on all four legs and a cross on his back.

Known as "Wally" to his friends, he is owned by his breeders Harvey and JoAnn Jordan. Wally competes in halter classes, as the Jordan's breeding program focuses on the conformation and quality of their animals. Shown by Harvey, 2014 was Wally's first year in the ring and he made quite the entrance - accumulating five First Place finishes, three Grand Champion titles, and a Best of Breed title. Market analysts watch out! His stock is still on the rise, as he's already earned title of Grand Champion Donkey at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in 2015!

The guest horses' meet and greet schedule will be posted on the Breyer Blog in June! Check back then to plan your visits to the stables.

You can see the exclusive BreyerFest models here. And don't forget to check out the other guest horses here.

She trains and has competed in nearly every type of horse show in the US since age 5, including dressage, hunter-jumper, driving, in-hand jumping, showmanship, halter, western pleasure, English huntseat and equitation, and working equitation. March 2, 2016

We learned all about Working Equitation yesterday and today we're going to learn about the riders who will be bringing this exciting discipline to life at BreyerFest Carnival!

First, let's meet Antonio Garcia!

Antonio Garcia was born and raised in the equestrian community of Spain, to a family with a long and rich history of riding and horse training traditions. Antonio began his career as a third generation rider for the esteemed Domecq Estate, one of the most respected equestrian families in Spain. It was during this time at Finca Los Alburejos that he was mentored by the legendary Alvaro Domecq, and where he performed in Equitación Mágica, one of the most famous equestrian shows in Europe. The show toured throughout the continent, including Portugal, France, and Germany.

The outstanding education he gained at Domecq Estate prepared Antonio to work at the prestigious Spanish stud Dehesa de Cabeza Rubia, where he was next mentored by legendary international competitors Ignacio Bravo and Bento Castellano (coach of the Portuguese Working Equitation Team). During this time, Antonio also trained the amazing and now-famous stallion Armas Tarugo and competed at SICAB (the Spanish National Show), bringing home many championships.

antonio 2

Following his amazing successes at SICAB, Antonio served as expert lecturer and equitation trainer for the prestigious equestrian clubs Hipica de Culleredo, Dehesa de Monteandres and Hipica Masferrat.

Antonio moved to the United States in 2011 to train horses at Haras Dos Cavaleiros, a top US Lusitano breeder. Over the next 4 years he focused mainly on Dressage and Working Equitation, working with the farm's horses from breeding, to colt starting, and finishing a large number of top show horses.

He has had great success in the US at the IALHA National Shows, Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, Las Vegas Andalusian World Nationals and the Haras Cup. Antonio's awards in Working Equitation are two-time First Place at Pin Oak, 2nd Place at Las Vegas Nationals, and Champion of US in 2012.

The beginning of 2015 brought a new chapter for Antonio, as he began work with Waller Farms to provide training and riding expertise for their organization. This has been a challenge he was excited to begin, as it meant riding and training horses of different breeds and ages in almost every discipline. Results from 2015 include multiple national championships and reserves in a large number of different shows, including Welsh Nationals, Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, several nationally ranked dressage championships, and PtHA World Show, one of the largest multi-breed shows in the US. Antonio also won several Champion and National titles in USEF/USDF dressage. The year with Waller Farms has been was very successful and we look forward to many more years to come!

Working Equitation demonstrations at BreyerFest Carnival!

The renowned Waller Farms (of Beaumont, Texas) will be on hand with lots of horses and riders to teach Breyer fans more about Working Equitation. Check the BreyerFest program (posted in June) for specific times. And check back later to read more about the horses and riders that will be at BreyerFest!

And in the mean time, let’s learn more about Working Equitation!

The sport of Working Equitation is truly an international discipline and is open to any breed and any level of rider. The discipline was created to celebrate the partnership between horse and rider, with a focus on classical horsemanship and use of the horse for ranch work. The aim of the sport is to preserve and perpetuate each country’s traditions and the tack and attire. Working Equitation was pioneered by four countries: Italy, Portugal, Spain, and France. The first International competition was held in 1996. The World Association for Working Equitation (WAWE) was established to govern the sport internationally in 2004.

A Working Equitation competition consist of four distinct trials-- Dressage, Ease of Handling, and Speed tests are required for both individual and team competitions. The fourth trial, Cattle work, is included for team competitions. Horse/rider pairs are scored in each of the trials, and these placings are then tallied to determine the overall placing at the competition.

Each level has its own dressage test. Each movement is given a numerical score, for the horse’s impulsion, submission, quality of gaits, as well as for the rider’s position and effective use of aids. The movements at each successive level build upon movements of the previous levels and coincide with the type and difficulty of movements expected in the Ease of Handling and Speed trials at the respective levels. In the case of a tie at the end of the competition, Dressage placings are used as a tiebreaker.

Ease of Handling

In this trial, horse and rider negotiate a series of obstacles, receiving a 0-10 score for the quality with which they perform each one. As with the Dressage trial, the judges also award collective marks for horse’s impulsion, submission, quality of the transitions, rider’s effectiveness, etc. In the Ease of Handling trial, judges are looking for smooth performance, with a particular emphasis on quality of the geometry within each of the obstacle patterns.

This trial uses many of the same obstacles as are used for Ease of Handling, but rather than being judged on the quality and smoothness of the performance, the event is timed, with the faster times placing higher.

Cattle Work

This trial tests the ability of a horse and rider to work, individually and as a team, with cattle. The test is performed with a team of 3 or 4 riders. The objective is for each rider to individually sort, cut, and herd a pre-selected cow from the herd and then as a team put it in a designated pen. As a timed event, there are time penalties for course errors.

Meet the famous Endo at BreyerFest 2016!

Endo, an appaloosa gelding, and his owner, Morgan, have been together for 15 years and the duo developed a deep connection almost instantly. They found their passion in working equitation, trick training and liberty work.

Over time, Endo developed glaucoma and recurrent uveitis, also known as moon blindness. As time passed Endo became more and more blind and suffered from painful symptoms in his eyes. By the time he was 12, Morgan decided his suffering had become too much and made the difficult decision to have his first eye removed; with his second eye removed six months later.

Having grown up with her own chronic illness, lupus, Morgan knew could help Endo through this extreme life change while keeping up Endo's outstanding quality of life. "I was back on Endo the day after his surgery," said Morgan. "The vet said it would be best if Endo kept up his normal routine, so that's what we did."

One of Endo's biggest challenges was keeping his balance after the change. Although Endo was mostly blind before his eyes were removed, he could still see light and dark. "When his eyes were removed he would get dizzy and unbalanced. We spent a lot of time working on circles, which were especially hard for him. We spent months slowly shrinking the circle and increasing speed," explained Morgan.

He quickly adjusted to his new life, easily learning how to navigate his stall, find his feed and water and most of all, stay in sync with Morgan! Within a year, Morgan and Endo were competing again, navigating the working equitation courses with preciseness and confidence - Morgan even taught Endo how to jump on command. Impressive!

"Endo is very smart and at times opinionated but he really loves everyone and tries hard to please," said Morgan. Unlike many horses, Endo does not have a favorite treat. "Endo eats everything! Especially if I'm eating; even if I try to eat quietly, he smells it and finds my hand holding the food," said Morgan laughing.

Today, Morgan and Endo enjoy a very ordinary life of training and competing; and of course the occasional star performances at exciting events like BreyerFest! "We're so excited to perform at BreyerFest! We have never been to Kentucky before," said Morgan. But most of all, Endo and Morgan enjoy spending time and having fun together!

Meet Endo at BreyerFest Carnival! The horse meet and greet's schedule will be announced in June!

Eye spy with my little eye the next BreyerFest Carnival special run! Can you guess who it is?

February 8, 2016

Every year there is A LOT going on at BreyerFest, and this year is no different!

BreyerFest Carnival is going to be our biggest and best event yet and we'll have some reminders on the BreyerFest blog over the next few months with tip and tricks to make the most of your time at The Kentucky Horse Park.

If you're new to BreyerFest you might have heard a lot of people talking about the "Special Runs". We have a quick cheat sheet for you and anyone that needs a refresher on how everything works.

Breyer creates models exclusively for BreyerFest Three-Day Ticket holders, these models are known as "Special Runs". The total number of models varies from year to year, but typically there are 8 different models to choose from. Within each option we may or may not have included some surprises - like ½ the run is glossy or the entire model is a surprise! With a "Surprise Set" you won't know anything about what you are buying until you open it! Models are announced here on the blog throughout the year leading up to BreyerFest. The models will also be on the Exclusive Models page after are released. Prices and quantities will be announced in the Event Program which is posted online before BreyerFest.

So how do you buy these models?! Each Three-Day Ticket holder receives a packet of information approximately 4-6 weeks after your ticket purchase is complete - it will include your admission button, a Celebration Model Redemption ticket, a ticket for any additional activities included with your ticket (like our Friday and Saturday evening shows) and a Special Run Ticket. The Special Run tickets are randomly chosen for each ticket packet. Tickets are for a specific day and time - this indicates the time in which you can shop in the Special Run section of the Breyer Store. Ticket times start at 10 am on Friday and run hourly through 12 noon on Sunday, and here's why! To keep things fair and organized, we have taken each model and broken the total quantity down into 18 different groups. This way each hour has an equal shopping opportunity. The Special Run ticket is also numbered. Fifteen minutes before the start of that shopping hour, a BreyerFest staff member will draw a random number to start the line. Small groups of people will be let into the store at a time to keep things from getting too crowded. If you are late and miss when your ticket number went into the store you will need to go to the end of the line, so please be prompt! Once you are in the Special Run section of the Breyer Store, you can purchase up to 2 different Special Run models. You cannot purchase 2 of the same model.

Here is an example of how to line up: You have received ticket #35 for the time slot of Friday afternoon from 2:00-3:00 p.m. At 1:45 p.m., a number will be drawn that will determine which ticket number will start the line. If the number drawn is #29, the line for that time slot will start with the holder of ticket #29, followed by #30, #31 and so on. When the last number has been reached, the next number will be #1, then #2 and so on. If you are late and your ticket number has already gone into the store you must go to the end of the line.

Important - Keep in mind that each person can only go through the Special Run line once per ticket and can only purchase 2 models at a time. If you are shopping for a child or a friend who is taking a workshop or showing and therefore have multiple Special Run tickets you cannot go through the Special Run Line with consecutively numbered tickets. You must line up again after your first ticket time or be sure each ticket is for a different hour. Another option is to give your extra ticket to someone else to go through the line for you.

What happens if I am showing all day Friday or Saturday? It is very important to tell us if you are planning to show in either the Open or Youth and Children's Show when you are buying your ticket. On the ticket order form there is a drop down that says "To aid special run ticket assignment, please choose one (NOTE: Must register for Model Horse Shows separately):" This drop down determines if you will get a Friday, Saturday or Sunday ticket time. If you indicate that you are planning to show on Friday in the Open Show, you will get a Saturday or Sunday ticket time. If you say you are planning to show on Saturday in the Youth and Children's Show, you will get a Friday or Sunday ticket time. Those that select either "Not Showing" or "Showing in Both Shows" will receive a randomly assigned ticket.

Important - This drop down is for planning purposes only and does not register you for the show. You must register for either show AFTER you complete this purchase. The account (email address) you used to purchase the 3-Day tickets will automatically be added to a group that has access to those registration pages.

What about Workshop conflicts? After you have completed your 3-Day ticket purchase, your account (email address) will be placed into a group that has access to register for Workshops. If your Special Run ticket ends up conflicting with your Workshop time you have a few options - have a friend or parent go shopping for you, switch to a different workshop or call Customer Service at 800-413-3348 for assistance.

A few additional important reminders -

1. Check your ticket packets as soon as you receive them - if anything is missing or you have questions call Customer Service at 800-413-3348 as soon as possible so you don't have to wait on line to speak to someone at the front gate!
2. Due to popular demand of Three Day tickets - we have extended ticket times through Sunday at noon. Plus, we are starting at 10 am instead of 9:30 am so guests have more time to get through the front gate first thing in the morning.

Have you heard about our Celebration Horse? Meet Imperador das Aguas JM

Imperador das Aguas JM, a 6-year-old Mangalarga Marchador stallion, is a respected ambassador of his rare breed and the perfect candidate for this year's BreyerFest Carnival Celebration Horse. Imported from Brazil by owner, Claudia Bellandi of C&C Bellandi Horse Racing at Oak Bell Farm, Imperador serves his role as breed ambassador by traveling the country performing demonstrations and meeting fans. Claudia explains that Imperador is a barn favorite who is very sweet with people. She also describes him as a

confident yet docile horse, some common characteristics of the Marchador breed. "He has a lot of energy and loves to play in the paddock, but when you ask him to do something he is very serious and easy to work with," explained Claudia. You can read more about Imperador on our Guest Horses page.

The story of our Breyer Mangalarga Marchador began with the selection of Brazil and Carnival as the theme for 2016. "We were inspired by the Olympics, the ‘brio' of Rio's Carnival," said Jaime Potkalesky, Breyer's Event Manager, "and we wanted a new sculpt that was just as exciting."

Breyer then turned to sculptor Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig, whose recent work on the Connemara Pony was her first Breyer sculpt. Breyer was thrilled to be working with Sarah again so soon!

An experienced artist of all things equine, Sarah is a passionate sculptor who enjoys working on all kinds of breeds and poses. She knew from the start that the Marchador sculpture would become one of her most challenging yet favorite sculptures. "I love the Marchador breed! They have a special quality to them that I find especially pleasing. So many people are unfamiliar with the breed, so hopefully this new piece will raise awareness of both the Marchador and other South American breeds." said Sarah.

One of the qualities that makes the Mangalarga Marchador breed so unique is its famous gaits, the marcha picada and the marcha batida. Breyer wanted a clearly gaited sculpt with animation. When deciding on a pose for the Marchador sculpture, Sarah immediately thought of the marcha picada, which would demonstrate the Mangalarga Marchador's gaited movement. "I've never sculpted a gaited breed before, especially one so exotic! It was a real adventure bringing him to life," said Sarah.

As it happens, however, Imperador is marcha batida gaited. He was such a superior choice for our Celebration Horse however, that Breyer decided to move ahead with Sarah's sculpt as conceived. Noted Jaime Potkalesky, "We select our Celebration Horses very carefully. We're looking for a horse with tremendous presence that must like people and be trustworthy around them given the demands of BreyerFest. Imperador was just the obvious choice."

Throughout the sculpting process Sarah tackled a handful of challenges that came with such a unique breed. "Getting the gait right while making the horse look like he was engaging himself was no easy task. His posture needed to be gaiting nicely but not tense, while also appearing soundly built with the look that he could go on for miles and miles," said Sarah. Another great challenge was the model's head and expression. "I studied many of their heads, and I noticed that they tend to be long and rectangular, with big, kind eyes and neat ears. So I came up with a head that featured all their appealing aspects," said Sarah.

When the model was finally complete, Sarah was pleased with the result. "I appreciate the uniqueness of each particular breed, so it was a lot of fun to capture the body type of the Mangalarga Marchador, to really celebrate the breed in all its unique glory," said Sarah. Her favorite parts include the model's neck, shoulders, tail and especially his head. "Sculpting his head really pushed my skills, which I appreciate. His eyes are big and soft, with a sweet expression," Sarah explained.

Overall, Sarah feels that the sculpting process flowed very well. "There were some little hiccups along the way-there always are-but overall, he sort of ‘sculpted himself.' That was both unexpected and welcome," said Sarah. "It was a real pleasure to bring this Mangalarga to life for Breyer. I hope he does well for them, and introduces the Mangalarga Marchador to the model horse world in style!"

Breyer's first Mangalarga Marchador, Imperador das Aguas JM, will be available at BreyerFest with each three-day ticket. It will be the only release of this mold in the United States until 2019! Make plans to join us at BreyerFest and claim your own Imperador! Early Bird prices will be honored until April 15, 2016.

Meet Mamacita y Chico, our European Special Runs!

The Andalusian traces its roots back more than 25,000 years to the Iberian horses of Spain and Portugal. As one of the world's most ancient breeds, the Andalusian has served as the foundation for many other European breeds such as the Lipizzaner, many German warmbloods, Ireland's Connemara, and England's Cleveland Bay.

By popular demand our Celebration of Horses show has been extended to two performances!

Now you can watch the incredible horses and riders on both Friday and Saturday night! This year's show features 2015 crowd favorite - KYB Dressage as well as Sylvia Zerbini and her breathtaking liberty acts and Jeff Wilson and his Cowboy Dressage routines. You can read more about our entertainers here.

Three-Day ticket holders select the day that works best for them when purchasing their tickets. So if you know you'll want to recover a bit after a hectic Saturday we suggest the Friday night show. But if you want to see the Live Auction on Friday night we suggest the Saturday night show instead.

Single Day ticket holders can still upgrade to either performance for $15. The ‘upgrade' tickets will be available in May when Single Day tickets go on sale. We're also selling tickets to the Celebration of Horses show only for $25, perfect for friends who aren't coming to BreyerFest during the day. Those tickets are available here.

Buy your tickets early! Seating is limited!

The Celebration of Horses shows are Friday and Saturday at 6 pm with doors open at 5 pm and carnival games on the concourse before the show.
