We are just about a month away from the BIGGEST Breyer event of the year and have spent the last several weeks highlighting so many talented artists who are excited to show off their wok to Breyer fans! We still have a bunch of incredible artists to talk about and we are excited to introduce you to today’s feature, who is getting ready to dazzle fans with some incredible custom pieces!
Meet - Donna Lorello of Arcadian Creations!
A resident of Connecticut and active Region 10 member, Donna has been involved in the hobby for as long as she can remember. She owes her involvement to her former neighbors, who gave her her first Breyer model back in 1977. She loved horses as a young girl and this model opened up a whole new world for her! After subscribing to Just About Horses in the early 80s, she was thrilled to see how much more there was to the hobby than just collecting. Seeing work by artists like Laura Rock-Smith and Kathleen Maestas inspired her to try her hand at repainting. And being a kid of the 80s, she of course had to go as far as adding ‘big hair’ to many of her early works!
Her work has given her the opportunity to share her love of horses with people near and far. Her favorite media to work with include a combination of acrylics, pastels, and pencils to create realistic 3D renderings of model horses, dogs, and even fantasy creatures. She loves to capture the realism of the horse on a model. She remembers seeing an incredible Victrix resin done by Liz Shaw and thought to herself that the model looked ready to take a breath and come to life – there wasn’t a single detail left behind and Donna wants to achieve that level of realism. She especially loves appaloosas and the challenge of their complex patterns.
Donna first heard about BreyerFest through Just About Horses many moons ago. She loves to see how the hobby has expanded to what it is today. Her first BreyerFest she attended was in 1991 when Mustang Lady was the Celebration Horse and she was able to see Misty II and her foal! This year she is exited to showcase her paintwork and will have several pieces for sale including her first two medallions she created! Can’t wait until July to see Donna’s beautiful work? Check her out here!
All of our ticket holders will have access to this year’s Artisans’ Gallery and Marketplace, so if you don’t have your tickets to BreyerFest yet, get yours here!
