Sisters Emily and Sarah Harris are obsessed when it comes to all things horses.
Like all horse girls, their love of equines and all things equestrian seems to be a part of their DNA – Sarah’s first word was even (sort of) ‘horse.’ Even though the pair are first generation horse owners, and they definitely don’t describe their parents as horsey people, their parents were supportive of their horse obsession and helped the girls achieve their dreams of owning real horses and then ultimately launching their YouTube channel, Sisters Horsing Around, in 2018.
Both girls own horses and are multi-disciplinary riders – they feel that being well-rounded horse women is essential and are eager to learn as much as they can. The sisters are United States Pony Club-certified and channel this passion and experience to reach non-equestrian communities, especially communities of color, to introduce them to the joy of horses. They credit their mother with teaching them at an early age how fortunate they are to be able to have real horses in their lives and use their platform of Sisters Horsing Around as an opportunity to reach out and get others involved with horses.
Emily and Sarah saw a gap between the horse community and the non-horse community that needed to be bridged. What better bridge than Sisters Horsing Around to connect these two sides? Emily and Sarah see themselves as “equestrian guides” helping people who aren’t familiar with horses become more involved and helping equestrians branch out from their disciplines to explore more. They are bright, self-taught, eager to learn more, and even more excited about reaching out to teach others.
Through their partnership with The STAND Foundation, they are working hard to bring horses to underserved communities by teaching equine safety, good horsemanship, and other skills using their Breyer model horse collection as examples. “Our Breyer models served as the perfect substitute for the real thing because they look exactly like real life horses! We can use them to show common horse colors, markings, and body types.” Though the pair both own real horses, they felt that the variety presented by their Breyer models would provide their students with a more in-depth learning experience.
The pair discovered Breyer horses as kids attending the Virginia State Fair, and after receiving models for Christmas that winter, they were positively hooked. It was also around this time the girls learned about BreyerFest, and though they’ve only been able to attend virtually so far, they still hope to one day attend at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Emily and Sarah will be joining us LIVE during BreyerFest weekend and we can’t wait for you to meet them! In the meantime, you can learn more about them, and their incredibly important community work, here. You can also find them on YouTube here.
All-Access tickets are sold out, but General Admission ticket holders can still be a part of all three days of Breyerfest, including our live check-in with Emily and Sarah! You can get your tickets here!
