Workshops at BreyerFest offer hands-on learning experiences for all skill levels! Whether you are a novice or veteran in the model horse hobby, we have a workshop for you!
This summer at BreyerFest, in addition to the awesome in-person workshops we’re offering, VIP, All-Access, and Online Traditional Access ticket holders will have access to this incredible selection of more than a dozen offerings! These sessions are all pre-recorded and will be available all BreyerFest weekend long, unless otherwise noted.
Supply lists for each session will be posted soon, so you can start getting your supplies together!
Advanced Repair
Skill Level: Intermediate - Advanced
You’ve learned the basics of repair from artist Jennifer O’Donnell Danza, but now you want to take your restoration skills and knowledge to the next level. This more advanced-level workshop explores the finer details of repairing and restoring model horses beyond gluing the pieces together. In this workshop we learn how to make the boo boos totally disappear.
Anatomy in Motion!
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
BreyerFest favorite Morgen Kilbourn is offering a new twist on her sculpting process by diving into horse anatomy! In this workshop Morgen will demonstration a variety of gaits and how to understand what muscles are being used in what movement. Follow along as she teaches how to build muscle groups appropriate for the movement using a variety of tools and 3D teaching media to help you build out any pose! No supplies are needed for this session!
Carousel Horses– Will Air Starting Saturday, July 15, 2023
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Join award winning carousel and equine artist Laura Rock-Smith to learn how to create a historically correct carousel horse with a Breyer Freedom Series Scale horse. You will learn the techniques used for everything from bridles to tassels along with tips and tricks to take your work to that next level. Laura will also cover a little of the history of American carousel figures, such as romance versus non-romance side.
Crafting Carriages– Will Air Starting Saturday, July 15, 2023
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Drive your favorite ponies forward in style with this year's Crafting Carriages BreyerFest workshop, hosted by Infinity Breyer’s Trinity Honaker! In this session, you’ll learn how to build the carriage of your dreams that your Stablemates scale Breyer Horses will be able to pull! This workshop features a DIY assembly kit created by Trinity that will allow for anyone to be able to build a fairy tale carriage for their Breyer’s from scratch! Drive forward after your dreams and come create some carriages with us at this year's BreyerFest!
Digital Sculpting - Introduction to Z-Brush
Skill Level: All levels
In this video sculptor Vincent Lange will talk you through the Z-Brush sculpting program step by step. It will focus on all the important elements of digital sculpting and teach you how to get started in Z-brush by explaining all the essential functions and shortcuts. A program that is very big and complex will be broken down so that even new users are able to understand and follow along. Dive down deep into the world of digital sculpting and learn what endless possibilities this new technology brings to the model horse hobby. For this session it is recommended to have a drawing tablet of some sort, though it is not required.
Harnessing Your Horses
Skill Level: All levels
Kristy Thiessen grew up in BC Canada driving Welsh ponies in cart and harness. She has a passion for driving and is excited to share the basics of model horse harnessing! In this tutorial she will go through a live miniature horse harnessing demonstrated by Hannah Logan, longtime hobbyist and driving enthusiast. Kristy will then demonstrate how to harness a model horse and attach it to the cart properly. Including many tips about harness care and model selection. Hopefully "driving you forward " into the love of the horse and cart.
Industrial Rust
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Renowned Australian artist Franceyn Dare will be joining us again and providing this fun session for our virtual guests. This Stablemates-scale project will give you the skills to rework your model to look like industrial metal, complete with beams and bolts, finished with a rusty look. Franceyn will walk students through the re-sculpting, weathering, and painting of this industrial-inspired pony.
Live Show Apron

Are you a live shower who wishes you had an extra set of hands? Hobbyist Lynn Isenbarger has the perfect solution for you with this fun sewing workshop – a Live Show Apron! This simple, cute apron has big front pockets that can hold everything from brushes, to tags, to stands as you make your way from your table to the show ring. Personalize yours with cute fabric and other adornments!
Making Sock Stick Hobby Horses
Skill Level: All levels
Artist Christina Riley will take virtual fans of all ages through all the steps of creating your very own hobby horse out of a sock! No experience necessary, but hot glue and scissors will be used, so we recommend parents assist little ones through this project.
Medallion Molding
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Have you sculpted a medallion, but don't know where to start to create a mold that can be used to make resin castings? This video, hosted by Lisa Smalley, will take you through the process of creating a silicone rubber mold of your medallion. Your completed mold can be used to make copies of your sculpture out of resin! This lesson is geared towards artists who already sculpt their own medallions and will not cover the medallion sculpting process.
Mohair Manes & Tails
Skill Level: Intermediate
In this fun virtual workshop session, taught by the incredible Janine Haq, viewers will learn how to create a realistic mane and tail for your model horse using mohair. This session will guide you through the process of learning how to prepare your original finish model (including removing the existing plastic mane and tail), and then how to attach and style the mohair.
Old Mold, New Life: Mold #54
Skill Level: All Levels
In this tutorial, Darynn Bednarczyk of DeeJayBe Studios will take mold #54 and give him new life! This mold represents Bravour 54 for this year’s celebration, making him the perfect example to practice on yourself. This method can be applied to any vintage style mold while maintaining the original essence of the sculpture. Using the base model as a template, you will learn how to resurface the model for realism and ease of painting.
Rainbow Holographic Pony Party – Will Air Starting Saturday, July 15, 2023

Canadian artist Shauna McDaniel will be making her BreyerFest workshop debut with this sparkly session! Participants in this session will be creating a magical rainbow dream horse, complete with holographic markings! Every horse will be unique based on how magical you want him to be. This workshop session requires no special skills or knowledge and is suitable for anyone willing to get a little glittery with Shauna.
“Stone” Performance Props
Skill Level: All Levels
Master doll and prop maker Anne Field is back again to help participants up their performance game! These fun “stone” look props add lots of oomph to your performance entry, but are super simple to execute! From stone walls and standards to animal-shaped shrubs, Anne will teach you how to beautify your bases!
