April 2020: Horses and Friends
Judging by Lindsay Diamond
Wow! It was an honor to be asked to judge this Photo Show and the theme of "Horses and Friends." I was amazed at not only the number of entries - over 150 in the 17 and under! - but also the quality and creativity shown in all of the pictures. Choosing my top six for each group was so hard! I looked for elements that really showed the dynamic between those in the picture for the theme of Horses and Friends - whether it was between a person and their horse or a horse and another horse or animal. Everyone really did a fantastic job with their pictures. Thank you all for making my job a challenge, but an exciting and enjoyable challenge!
17 and Under
1st place:
Hannah W., GA
As I looked through all of the amazing photos, this one stood out a few different times for the composition, the relationship between the two horses, and for the subtle way it shows friendship and best friends. The simple act of being near a best friend is one of the best feelings in the world.
2nd place:
Grace C., FL
Being able to share a love of horses with your best friend is one of the best feelings in the world. Sharing a trail ride and a beautiful day is an amazing display of what being best friends can be.
3rd place:
Kaleigh D., IL
I think we can all agree that given the environment the world has been in this year, any way that we can stay connected with our friends and family is so important. Even though we’ve had to stay away from our friends, being able to see them, no matter what the method, keeps the bonds we have strong, and we will get through this!
4th place:
Macy B., KY
Foals love to play – there’s nothing better than playing with your best friend, and having a water fight is so much fun! The detail and the way the picture has been shot with the water splashing is amazing - it’s a beautiful picture!
5th place:
Kendall L., WA
The two best friends a person could ever have shown together in one photo - this is a lovely shot! The dog looks so sweet, a lifelong best friend, and I’d venture this is a favorite model of the photographer.
6th place:
Shania F., NC
Spending a warm spring afternoon with your best friend, your horse, is a fantastic feeling. The set-up of this picture is so pretty - the yellow of the girl’s shirt being similar to the color of her horse and contrasting with the green grass clearly shows these two a very close!
Honorable Mentions:
Charlotte R., FL
This picture made me smile each time I saw it. The three friends are clearly off on an adventure together!
Parker E., VA
The simplicity of this picture drew me back to it. The shadow set-up with the blue background is a beautiful picture. As the horse and dog meet in the middle, you know it’s going to be a good day when they get together!
18 and Over
1st place:
Branigan K., OK
As I looked through all of the wonderful photos, this one jumped out at me because this was definitely me as a kid, and even a young adult! To me, there was nothing better than sitting in a stall or paddock with horses surrounding me, just enjoying their company - the best friend anyone could ever want!
2nd place:
Alawnia D., PA
If I had not know better, I might have thought this was a live picture! The playfulness between the foal and dog shows the joy that both critters have in their lives. The water splashing and the focus is stunning!
3rd place:
Margaret J., KS
Foals definitely have an inquisitive nature about them, and they want to make new friends wherever they can! The curiosity here between the foal and the bull might not last, but for right now, they each have a new friend to hang with!
4th place:
Rebecca G., MA
Spending time on a picnic with your horse and horse is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. The bond between a girl and her horse definitely shows as they share some snacks almost looks like it’s making the dog a little jealous! I hope she brought some snacks for him too.
5th place:
Sharon W., CO
We could all use a tea party with our friends right now! The bowl of apples on the table, the foals all gathered excitedly around to see what’s there, and the adults standing back, watching the foals enjoy themselves. There are fun new things as I continue to look at the picture and enjoy the creativity in the photo.
6th place:
Rachel A., NC
This picture just jumped out due to the styling and the filter on the photo - wow! I imagine it to be a fairy tale setting - two sisters or best friends out with their horses in the woods. The colors are striking and merge together in ways that keep drawing the eyes to different things each time you look at it.
Honorable Mention:
Elizabeth D., CA
With the current situation in the world, definitely one way to show your best friends that you care is to wear a mask! I loved the creativity on how each animal is wearing a mask!
