December 2020: Holiday Happenings
Judging by Heather Malone
I love the holiday season. I love what it represents. It takes family, friends, faith, homecoming and giving and wraps it up into one stretch at the end of the year that we celebrate with fellowship and gathering (until this year, anyway). I loved it when I was a child because PRESENTS! Twice a year, on my birthday and Christmas, people would give me Breyer horses as gifts, and I looked forward to it breathlessly. So, I wanted the Photo Show winners to evoke the look and feel of the holidays from my perspective and tell a story of joy and love with Breyer horses and the holiday spirit!

This just hit all my buttons. A beautiful winter scene and a well-composed photograph that tells a lovely story of friendship and shared bonds over horses. The way the trees on the background frame the riders is just wonderful. Well done!
2nd place:
Catalina T., TX
This scene is so funny and joyful that I just couldn’t resist it. The setup is nice and clean, and laid out well. The major pièce de résistance is the horses that are caroling with their sheet music! Hilarious.
3rd place:
Carrie M., VA
This photo is breathtaking! It’s so simple and atmospheric, and the colors and mist in the background are stunning. The horse is such a lovely focus point in this moment of naturalistic beauty. It would have been nice to have tracks in the snow left behind the model to give the impression that he has been walking through it.
4th place:
Madeline M., KS
This setup really sings due to all the handmade elements and its storytelling of holiday decorating fun. I love the paper wreath and stockings, and the tree with the tiny ornaments. The handpainted background is also a nice touch! This setup is just all-around excellent.
5th place:
Alissa B., IN
This image does a really great job of capturing the joy and chaos of Christmas morning! All the little details in this scene are amazing, like the hardwood floor, the ribbon on the tree, the torn paper scattered about and the Breyer box. The horseball sticking out of the box slays me! I do find the shot a tad high-angled, which is a little distracting.
6th place:
Meleya J., TN
I love the composition of this entry - it reminds me of a holiday card. It’s very well thought-out, symmetrical, and clean. I adore the horses in the windows and the string lights that are actually lit up. Nice job!
Honorable Mentions:
Emilie F., WI
Watching Elf with your horse? Awesome.
Kinsey F., FL
Marshmallow roasting à la unicorn horn. Brilliant!
Taylor J., NC
I’m a sucker for a mistletoe scene. So cute!

Who doesn’t want a pony for Christmas? This is such an adorable scene with great composition and depth of field. I LOVE this Welshie mare mold and the way she is adorned with the wreath and tack in the photo. All the little touches like the candy and the thermometer provide those details that make this shot wonderful and heartwarming. Bravo!
2nd place:
Sioux W., FL
The first thing that drew me to this image are the lovely colors. The soft greens and blues with the pearlescent cream-white horses and the stark white snow is just gorgeous! I also love the strong family element of the photo and the whimsy of the unicorns as well. They all look perfectly matched together. Beautiful.
3rd place:
Rebekah H., OH
The mischief of this photo is everything. I love this mare sneaking a candy cane off the tree through the window. What a well-composed scene! The tiny My Dream Horse craft kits are such nice touch. I’d love to see a tad more detail in the picture to bring a little more life to it, like wall hangings, a doll, or a dog!
4th place:
Lucy K., TX
I think my favorite part of this scene is the familiarity it brings. As horse people, we all know those cold, short winter days where you bring in your horse in total darkness to the light and warmth of the barn. I can almost “feel” this image. It’s also very atmospheric with the twinkle lights and shifting colors. Very well done!
5th place:
Josephine H., NY
This is a lovely composition that feel so mythic and otherworldly. The clearware unicorn looks stunning with the moonlight casting color and shadow through her and onto the snow. The snow has a lovely sparkle, and the background is a mood! I love that the moon recalls the Christmas Star as well.
6th place:
Cammie M., IL
I am a sucker for a mistletoe scene, and this one does not disappoint. All the holiday decoration detail is fantastic, and I love the red and green ribbon halters. The best part, however, is Snowman laying one on Truly Unsurpassed, who looks quite embarrassed!
Honorable Mentions:
Amber H., CO
Filigrees make the best holiday card horses! I love this arrangement and the candy cane graphics.
Kayla L., ME
What's better than a pony for Christmas? A gift-wrapped one!
Cynthia B., TX
I think I just love the fact that the foal's stance mimics that of the golden deer in this photo!
