NW Expo, April 20, 2013 Corvallis, Oregon

Here's a show wrap up from show coordinator Traci Durrell-Khalife!

The 26th annual NW expo was a big success. Even the weather cooperated and brought us a mostly sunny day. Fifty-two entrants and two proxies from Oregon, Washington and Idaho competed in over 215 classes and 10 divisions.

Kid's Division handout

Six youth participants participated in the Kids Division. For some it was their first model show, and they reported having a wonderful time and looking forward to coming back next year with more models to show. Judge Michelle Hansen took time to explain judging criteria before the Kids classes started. She also explained placings after several of the classes. I put a half sheet on each of the youth tables with a picture of their judge along with Kids Division volunteers Juanita Snyder, Laura Pervier and myself. It stated that if they had any questions about breeds, classes or show procedures they could ask any one of us and we'd be happy to help them.

Grand Champion in the Kids Division received a Breyer Wapiti model and Reserve Grand Champion received a Breyer Marwari. Both were generously donated by long-time NW Expo entrant Carolyn McRae.

In the open divisions, the five judges did an outstanding job of evaluating the entries and getting through the classes. Many classes had 30 or more entries, and some were split. Competition is always keen at this show, and this year was no exception.

In addition to rainbow rosettes, open division Grand Champions received royal blue fleece pony pouches with the NW Expo logo embroidered on them.

I had announced ahead of the show that the Zuni and Mariah drawings would take place at 11 am. When that much-awaited time came, the whole show hall fell silent. My mother had invited two of her friends to stop by and do the drawings, so they were done by people who didn't know the hobbyists. I had also put a list of all the entrants' names next to the containers holding the same names on slips of paper to show that each entrant was included. The first drawing was for Zuni. He was won by Della Suttles of Burlington, Washington. The next drawing was for the Kids Division for the Classics Horse of the Year, Mariah. Ten-year-old Madelynn Walker of Oregon was the lucky winner. The glossy Black Beauty was sold at auction, started on Model Horse Sales Pages and available to bids at the show.

Each year I award gift bags to the entrant coming the longest distance, the first entry received, the youngest entrant and a drawing among class/championship sponsors and one among donors. Other features include a silent auction, a raffle and a door prize for everyone.

There were several vendor tables throughout the room, as well as new Breyer merchandise at the Cascade Models booth.

The real reason for our hobby is to make friends, have fun and share our love of all things horsey. I'm always happy to see I'm accomplishing these goals when I read the evaluations after the show. Comments included "such a friendly atmosphere," "I had a blast," and "So much fun." No doubt, they'll be back next year!

Breyer received this kind thank you note from Traci after the show. We're happy to hear the NW Expo enjoyed such a great turnout!

Are there any more shows scheduled for OR in 2014?

I have two young girls how would love to come and possibly participate in one of the breyer horse shows. My daughter is only 6 soon to be 7. Can she participate? She owns something like 47 or 57 breyers some are older ones from when I was kid and others are new.
