Sseduction and Sshampagne Kissess Arrive at SKY Ranch

3/27/14 - Meet Your New Home!

Hay it's me Sshameless++ and am I ever a proud Pap, reporting to you from Northern Arizona!

As I told you at my last writing, we are a very lucky family. We spend the winters in Arizona's Valley of the Sun and summers at 7,000 feet, surrounded by the world's largest stand of Ponderosa Pines in Arizona's northland. It's our heaven on earth...SKY Ranch.

We headed out after a hectic morning of closing up our Scottsdale packing of our blanket bags, shutting the barn water off in Scottsdale for the summer, the annual sprinkling of rattle snake pellets to detour snakes from nesting in our barn while we're away...we were off and headed to the beautiful northlands where we spend six months out of the year.

Back at SKY Ranch

We all arrived safely. In total, there were three horse trailers, our John Deere tractor on a trailer, and then there's the Gator on a small trailer that we always want to make sure arrives safely because it usually is loaded with our hay, three times a day!

It's a 2 ½ hour drive on the freeway and then 3 ½ miles on a dirt road. We all caravan so everyone arrives at the same time. And I have to say, as soon as we make the turn into SKY Ranch everyone knows we've arrived and we all break out in song, whinnies sound from every trailer, calling out, "We're here! We're back at the Ranch!" It's a feeling I cannot describe, the smell of the pines, the expansive pastures, the freedom, the relaxation, the freshness of the cool's 30 degrees cooler than the hot summers of Scottsdale, Arizona! A hot day at SKY Ranch is 85 degrees, our average temperatures are in the 70s.

And, our barn is a one of a kind. Our human Dad Jerry salvaged a 100-year-old wood Army barrack, had the wood re-milled and designed into a peg set barn, which means there are no nails.

Our Barn

It's an amazing home for us, cozy on the cold nights, a fortress during the powerful storms northern Arizona is known for. And, I have the middle stall that looks out over the property and facing me, across the barn aisle, are the two large mare and foal stalls and next to them, the yearlings' stalls.I get to see my beautiful kids just across the aisle. Speaking of our property, did I mention, we have 40 acres of pasture surrounded by National Forest...and I get to trail ride every other day, just me and my human Mom Lisa.

I know I'm getting carried away but we all love to arrive at SKY Ranch. It's pretty hectic that first day, and our good friends Patrice and Mark flew in to help settle us all in (Patrice has one of my babies, Sstolen Hearts).

As the trailers parked, and our legs steadied after the long drive, I could hear Lisa talking with Jerry and Daniel about pasture assignments. And that we need to pay special attention because Sshampagne Kisses and Sseduction will be turned loose with their mom's in their own 10-acre pasture.

The mare and foal pasture at SKY Ranch

But before the Moms and Foals are unloaded, the adult horses are put in the 12 ½ acre pasture, on the northern border of the property. The yearlings are put in the east pasture, adjacent to the Moms and Foals, I get to go in the sandy arena, and what fun it is to kick it up myself and roll, oh roll, one of my favorite things! It's a great way us horses scratch our backs and even soothe stiff muscles after a trailer ride.

When the mare and foal trailer doors open the babies to have their first look at SKY Ranch. I am so proud of my baby girls. They did not hesitate hopping off the trailer and could not wait to make their way to their pasture. Wide open space for running, bucking, playing. There are Ponderosa Pine Trees that make a great obstacle course to circle around. And boy, did my girls make a great play day of it. Sseduction and Sshampagne Kisses ran, bucked, chased, and played.

In Motion Pasture Play

Lisa, Jerry and Morning Miste, grandmother of Sseduction and Sshampagne Kisses

We could all hear their squeals of glee, resonating from every corner of the property. They'd never seen anything like it...lots of space to run and those tree, they'd never seen a pine tree. And through it all that first afternoon, their moms Hey Miste America and Hey Shooting Star had quite challenge keeping close to their girls.

I have to say, I was amazed watching those fillies run, with their long legs, they sure cover a lot of ground. Our first few days out are monitored pretty closely, just a few hours a day as we acclimate to the altitude and the new spring grass in the pastures. It's a great place but Lisa makes sure that we gradually adjust because if us horses eat too much of the new grass or run too much in the higher elevation we can get sick.

After three hours at play that first day, we're taken to the barn where, I have to say, we're all ready for a rest. It's been a great day of wonderful adventure, but it is really nice to walk into our beautiful wood stalls bedded with our deep, pine shavings and settle in for dinner, relaxation and barn closing plus bran mash with carrots and apples at 8 pm.

Sshampagne gives it up

The fillies did not even make it to barn closing, they were both stretched out and sleeping deeply. We could all hear their gentle nickers as they dreamt of galloping across acres of pasture with fragrant pine trees and a summer of discoveries ahead within northern Arizona magical forestlands...the sights, the sounds, the wild animals, the beauty of SKY Ranch; all there waiting for my girls Sseduction and Sshampagne Kisses to experience.

The Sun sets on SKY Ranch

Lots of adventures ahead, for us all!
