The Show Hunters Take on Model Horse Show!

By D'Arry Jone Frank

I really enjoyed judging this Hunter class for Breyer! I saw some really nice entries, and some that needed some work, but I enjoyed judging all of them! Some tips on general photos for showers...try to keep your backgrounds in scale to your horses. Trim grass, smash down dirt, keep things simple. Add fences or other horses by all means! And there is nothing wrong with using a photo backdrop, or an arena wall that you've made, lots of Hunter shows are inside. If you are going to use a rider, make it as correct as possible, riders with flyaway hair or heads down will penalize you, better off not using them.

I had to disqualify some entries because of inappropriate jumps. Hunters are natural and natural type obstacles. No colored poles, flags, colored standards, numbers, or loud colored rider clothing. And no boots or bandages! Save that for the Jumper classes (next month!). And remember, if your hunter entry is under saddle with no jump, martingales are not allowed.

First Place

Sheriff H. -  Twin Springs - A really nice set up, a bit plain, but very clean and neat. The tack fit well, the fence was appropriate for a hunter course, and the pony was well turned out.

Second Place

Elizabeth K. - This horse had a terrific turn-out. Very breed appropriate for Hunters, moving in a nice balanced trot, with tack that fit perfectly. The background was clean and uncluttered, and made for a lovely photo.

Third Place

Saralilly - Another on-the-flat entry that I liked quite well. It's important to get riders that fit well, and this one does. Well-fitting tack, an arena wall backdrop, all lend to a pleasing photo depicting a hunter under saddle entry.

Fourth Place

FullSizeRender - This photo could have been beautiful, because it has all the elements I like! Well fitting tack, an adorable rider, lovely hunter jump. Unfortunately, the photo is out of focus, and is taken at a live show, which is generally not acceptable at a photo show.

Fifth Place

Hunter Jumper - Maddie K. - This was a good effort photo! The major flaw is that the rider is looking down, a problem over fences! But the fence is in proportioned and clean, and very hunter typey.

Sixth Place

Anna Grace C. - This photo had a nice feel to it, I love the background with the fencing, and the tack fits well on this Stablemate. But the fence is too large for a hunter entry, and the horse is trotting, which would make this fence even more challenging.

Honerable Mention

Elizabeth M. - I like how she sets up people and horses in the background of this entry, but there are elements included that are out of scale, and that needs to be addressed.
