Driving Turnout with Mary Chris Foxworthy
Not all carriages are surreys or buggies. Like cars, carriages have very specific names and functions and in this fascinating seminar session, HD Harkness owner Mary Chris Foxworthy will explain to BreyerFest fans the ins and outs of driving turnout. Just as vehicles on the road today serve specific purposes, so did the many carriages that were used in the past. Each carriage was “turned out” to suit the specific use of that carriage - the horse, harness, appointments, and even clothing of the driver and passengers all served a purpose. Join Mary and learn the names of carriages, what they were used for and how they should be turned out. She’ll even have some items used for driving that you will be able to see and handle!

There will be a question and answer period too. Need a more hands-on experience? Register for one of our many workshops!
Trotting Through Time with Emily Oakes
Making her BreyerFest seminar debut, historian Emily Oakes joins us from Canada to present to BreyerFest fans a history of horse-drawn vehicles from North America. This talk will examine both urban and rural work, transportation, and the development of equine sports involving wheeled vehicles like combined driving and harness racing. This presentation will examine the horse/human relationship and how this relationship has shifted from work to sport over time. Accompanying Emily’s presentation will be various Breyer models that showcase driving, including Old Timer, vintage Fire Horse Wagon, Adios, Kennebec Count, and Bravour 54.
