December 2022: Merry and Bright
Judging by Meredith Conrad
Hi, I’m Meredith and I have been collecting model horses since 2008 and riding real horses since 2005! I have loved horses for as long as I can remember and I really enjoy judging model horses, whether online or in person at live shows. I am very excited to be judging Breyer’s Merry and Bright Photo Show - there are so many amazing entries and it has been hard to choose the winners! All of these wonderful photos have really kept me in the holiday spirit even though the holidays are “officially” over!

1st place:
Mazzy M., CA
Wow, what a beautiful photo! The lighting is so soft coming from the tree, and gives the feel of being tucked away in a barn while it’s snowing softly outside. I love the little details like the cookies and the bag of icing! Great job!
2nd place:
Kinsey H., FL
I have to say, I love all the colour in this photo! The foal helping herself to a gift from under the tree is just precious, especially with the elf tucked in all the presents. The decorations on the barn help to set a perfect holiday scene!
3rd place:
Lilly R., NC
What a creative photo! I love that the horses are all freeing their new friend from under the tree, it’s so imaginative and sweet that they want to play with their new herd-mate! The horses on the table helping themselves to Santa’s milk and cookies are a great touch too, wonderful job!
4th place:
Josie S., OH
Another creative photo! I love that all the horses are getting ready for the holidays! There are so many little details in this photo that really stood out: the foal eating cookies under the table, the family photo above the mantle, the stockings hung by the chimney with care... wow! Such a beautifully well-lit photo that makes me think of Santa’s workshop.
5th place:
Hannah L., NH
This photo is so sweet, and really is a horse lover's holiday dream! Being able to trust your horse so much to stand on their back and top the tree with the star is a beautiful sight. I love the use of the snow and the cozy appearance of the doll - great job!
6th place:
Cadence B., TX
This looks to be a really nice moment between two horse lovers. I couldn’t imagine how wonderful it must be to go out into the woods and pick out a tree and then drag it back to the barn! I love the soft background with the mountains and snow, and the sweet red barn just looks so inviting and cozy.
Honorable Mentions
Lindsay H., ON, Canada
Another sweet tree decorating scene! I love that everyone is able to join in on the fun.
Abby M., DE
This scene is a riot! I love all the mischief of the animals loose in the barn – my favourite part is the dog with a wreath on!
Mary H., WY
This picture is so sweet, I love that the bird has itself a new friend!
McKenna H., ID
What a nice photo – I love that the goat is curious of the foal and the fresh snow makes the scene so pretty!

1st place:

This is such a beautiful photo. I have always loved the idea of wrapping a horse for the holidays! The ribbon is so festive and the barn looks like it’s nice and cozy. The candy cane is such a cute touch! Wonderful photo!
2nd place:
Kiley C., AZ
I have to say I love this photo! It is so much fun and really makes me think about how enjoyable the snow is! It looks like everyone is really enjoying themselves and that they are indeed Merry & Bright!
3rd place:
Cade R., AZ
This looks to be a holiday tradition for these horse lovers! I couldn’t imagine being able to canter my pony around the tree with a string of lights and being able to make it look so beautiful! They truly look to be enjoying themselves and this photo looks like it is made to be a Christmas card!
Daphne H., UT
Another horse wrapping photo! This looks like it’s a barn challenge and there are 2 teams racing against each other to see who can wrap their pony fastest – what a great idea for a barn holiday party! It looks like everyone is having so much fun and the pony on the left looks to be a little naughty and ripping their wrapping paper – such a cute detail!
5th place:
Laurie W., NY
This is another photo that looks like it could be a Christmas card! The snow is so beautiful, and I have always loved this holiday horse and sled. I think my favourite parts have to be the little dog and the driver's pink hat! I just love that the sled is full of goodies, both for horses and humans alike!
6th place:
Maddie M., FL
This is another beautiful barn photo, I love that the horse has her own hat and cozy blanket while she’s being spoiled with candy canes and a pile of presents. I love the garland and lights up along the top too, beautiful job!
Honorable Mentions
Mal J., NS, Canada
This is such a beautiful winter scene! I have to say this is one of my favourite holiday horses to date, and the ice on the branches just perfects it.
Jessica H., NH
This is a dream of mine, to be able to ride under the northern lights, especially bareback in the snow! Such a beautiful sight!
Caitlin E., CO
This is a beautiful photo, I love the way the sun is in the background and the fresh snow on the branches. I’d say they really are dashing through the snow!
Sara B., MI
This is such a sweet photo! I love that the pony is wearing antlers and has treats in his stocking!
