September/October 2019: Horse Sports
Judging by Jennifer Buxton
The theme for this month's photo show was "Horse Sports." Entrants were asked to depict either a traditional equestrian event, such as Dressage, Endurance or Reining, or they could take a more fanciful approach and portray sports played by horses when no humans were present. This resulted in some very diverse, apples vs. oranges-type classes. Choosing the winners was a real challenge. Thank you to everyone who made my job so difficult!
17 and Under
1st place:
Cora B., CA
This well-lit, well-composed photo best portrays the "Horse Sports" theme. The dolls are perfectly posed, and the tight crop adds immediacy and the impression of speed. The only thing I would change is to upgrade the horses' bridles.
2nd place:
Abigail C., FL
Of all the un-mounted "horse soccer" entries, this is the one that impressed me the most. I love how well the full-scale backdrop blends with the models in the foreground. If the grass had been trimmed, this might have contested for the top spot!
3rd place:
Angelica L., TX
This is another really nice "horse soccer" scene. The photo quality is very high, and the horse is looking at the soccer ball like she is ready to play.
4th place:
Jordyn R., VA
Soccer again, this time with old time photo effects. I like the details of the field and the goal.
5th place:
Lydia W., CA
In a class filled with "horse soccer" pictures, this one stands out. Kudos to the photographer for her unique perspective.
6th place:
Elise F., ID
Yet another well-done soccer photo. I especially like the added details of the dog referees and the crowd in the background.
Honorable Mentions:
Clarissa S., CA
This is a well-set up mounted horseball entry, featuring well-chosen models and nicely posed dolls. The focus and lighting could be improved, but this one was very close to cracking the top six.
Alex C., CA
This was perhaps the most beautiful photo in the class. I wish the photographer had included some information as to what they were depicting!
18 and Over
1st place:
Tish K., CO
This ambitious and creative entry takes the "Horse Sports" theme and runs it all the way down the end zone! There's so much detail here. I especially appreciated the horse-themed helmets and the Stablemates audience in the background.
2nd place:
Rachel A., NC
Like the winner, this is another highly-detailed, fantasy entry depicting horses engaging in a human sport. Although I am not generally a fan of boxing, I really enjoyed this entry. The models are well-chosen, and I like their posters on the wall. Good work!
3rd place:
Kaitlin R., FL
This gorgeous beach photo depicts a herd of horses playing "Capture the Flag" with their show ribbons. This definitely seems like an activity horses would play on their own.
4th place:
Cheyenne W., TX
Fourth place goes to the fishing entry. This is a well-composed, realistic scene in which both horse and human seem to be enjoying themselves.
5th place:
Lauren S., NH
Here's another nice, realistic entry. I'd like to see a few more foxhounds and a bigger wall, but Voeyur makes a great foxhunter!
6th place:
Willow C., WA
A traditional show-ring style games entry rounds out the top six. This is a well-photographed, attractive scene that would do better with a faster-moving horse.
Honorable Mention:
Carol S., NJ
I'm not sure this one is completely on-theme, but I love the big and little decorated horses!
A big thank you to all of our participants - your prizes and ribbons will be mailed out soon!
