October 2018: Halloween Spooktacular
Judging by Elaine Boardway
Thank you for your great response to the fall photo show contest. For this show, I wanted to see how you interpreted the Halloween theme. I saw everything from actual performance entries to spooky scenes. I was looking for a clear theme from you, with in-scale props and backgrounds. I really enjoyed the special effects some of you added to your scenes; however, I marked you down if the photo was too blurry.
17 and Under
1st place:
Lillian W., VA
I placed this entry first because it was well-executed and even had a horse show theme. The background was perfect, the photo was crisp, and the story was clear. The sign in front of the judge was the icing on the cake.
2nd place:
Abbie C., TX
There were several trick-or-treating scenes, and I loved the execution of this one. The scale of the props is realistic, the dim lighting works and I totally believe the adult would answer the door in a spooky costume.
3rd place:
Rachel A., NC
I placed this entry third because this was an excellent use of photo effects. I thought this helped make the entry even spookier.
4th place:
Anna W., SC
This entry came in fourth because I love a good performance entry. The tack looks great and the choice of props is in scale. That said, the photo is slightly blurry.
5th place:
Rebekah S., CA
I placed this entry fifth because of the spectacular lighting effects. Everything is in scale. I cannot tell what is on top of the saddle though.
6th place:
Kayla C., CA
I loved the exuberance of these foals. Children this young often have to trick-or-treat during the daytime, which added to the realism for me.
Honorable Mention:
Shannon S., CA
I gave this entry an honorable mention because it shows an excellent use of costumes and props. It got a little busy with purple paper grass!
18 and Over
1st place:
Sharon W., CO
I placed this photo first because of the meticulous eye for detail. Everything in this photo is a feast for the eyes and who better to dress as Picasso than Picasso himself! This is the entry that kept drawing me back to it.
2nd place:
Dayna S., OH
I placed this photo second for originality and attention to detail. The rider is gutsy but secure, and the horse (dragon) is brave and obedient. The war bridle is unconventional but not unheard of for jumpers.
3rd place:
Liisa E., IL
This charming photo came in third because of its pleasing composition. The rider commands attention, the lighting sets off the subject, and the bats are blurred like they are in motion. The bridle is a little thick, but it fits well and goes with the theme of a local contest.
4th place:
Abby R., MO
I placed this photo fourth. I loved the effect of the fog and glowing pumpkins. This was an excellent choice of model because he reflects the moonlight right back.
5th place:
Maddie K., FL
This is the fifth place photo. I really liked the theme, and the background and forest floor enhanced the presentation. Jason Voorhees has never been this cute.
6th place:
Donna D., NJ
I placed this photo sixth. The costume is adorable and to scale. The theme has a universal appeal and the composition is pleasing. The plants in the background are a bit large to be from a muggle's garden.
