Breyer model horses, which begin as artist’s sculptures, are handcrafted and hand-painted with airbrushes and paintbrushes – a process which is still done by human hands, not machines. Even today, no two Breyer models are ever exactly alike!
Our leading equine experts select the right breed for the right time. Every Breyer model is an authentic horse breed, from its bone and muscle structure to its personality, color and marking. Sketches help determine the model’s correct composition.
A wire armature is created to give basic shape to the body and pose.
Sculpting clay is applied by hand to the wire armature to build the underlying muscle structure.
The finished sculpt is cast into a copper and steel mold.
Molds are injected with Cellulose Acetate, an expensive resin selected for its ability to capture the depth of detail, delicate feel and richness of color in our models.
Once the model is molded, each individual model is prepped and finished by hand and then turned over to the painting department for hand painting and detailing, using both paint and air brushes to achieve unique techniques.
Each horse is then hand-packed into its display package and delivered to Breyer fans all over the world.
In all, some 20 artisans work on each individual model horse, creating an exquisite hand-made horse that is as unique as the real horse that inspired it.
