Exclusively for Breyer Collector Club members! Breyer test run models are initial decos painted up to see how a particular color might look on a particular sculpture. Or, they may be created to test out a painting technique or new colorway. Not all test run models are used, and they may vary over time as different painting techniques are developed and tested. Each model has a fixed price and interested members enter a random draw for the ability to purchase the test piece.
Breyer honored a variety of Olympic equestrian superstars in the early 2010s – one such horse was Sam, the mount of Team Germany eventer Michael Jung. Sam won two gold medals at his first trip to the Olympics in 2012, and the pair were the first horse and rider ever to hold Olympic, European and World titles simultaneously.
As you may recall, Breyer released a golden model of another 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Valegro, to celebrate his win. This golden test run model of Sam was intended to be part of a whole series of – literal! – gold medalist models that never came to fruition. This model is painted solid gold with subtle highlighting in the flanks, grey hooves, and subtle shading on the legs, tail, and muzzle, plus a high gloss finish.
This test piece is in excellent condition overall, with just a few pinpoint black specks beneath the gloss. This piece of Breyer history is priced at $1,200 and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
