Exclusively for Breyer Collector Club members! Breyer test run models are initial decos painted up to see how a particular color might look on a particular sculpture. Or, they may be created to test out a painting technique or new colorway. Not all test run models are used, and they may vary over time as different painting techniques are developed and tested. Each model has a fixed price and interested members enter a random draw for the ability to purchase the test piece.
Stud Spider (mold #66) was sculpted by Chris Hess after actor Jim Brolin’s champion Appaloosa stallion of the same name. This unique piece was painted with the original metal mask used to create the blanket appaloosa coat on Stud Spider portrait models, but instead of black, his coat color is Wedgewood blue! This fan-favorite decorator color debuted in the 1960s alongside Copenhagen, Florentine and Gold Charm, but like the rest of the original four “classic” decorator colors, was rarely revived before the new millennium. He features detailed tri-color eyes with brown irises and eye whites.
As a true test model, the Wedgewood Stud Spider is not in perfect condition – he has been moved around and handled many times during his tenure at Breyer HQ. His body has shiny marks, black marks and a couple of rubs on his off-side hip. (Most of his flaws are concentrated on the off-side of his body.) He still remains a fun and unique piece of experimental Breyer history! See gallery for details – click on each photo to view a larger image in order to examine flaws.
