The Icelandic horse is the only breed of horse native to Iceland. Although these horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Today they have found popularity the world over for their hardiness and comfortable gaits.

The Icelandic displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop commonly displayed by other breeds: the tölt, a four-beat lateral ambling gait with explosive acceleration and speed, and flugskeið, a "flying pace" which is fast and smooth.
