For this week’s installment of Tails from the In-Gate, we took a trip outside the Covered Arena and met up with long-time workshop and seminar instructor, Liz Isham Cory. In addition to being a veteran BreyerFest attendee (her first visit was back in 1993), Liz also spent some time working at HQ as the editor for Just About Horses magazine during the mid-1970s. Her model horse knowledge and BreyerFest experience are both extensive, and we are so honored to be able to share some of her memories with our Blog readers.
“I’ve been attending BreyerFest since 1993 and watching it grow from the early days to what it is now has been an amazing experience. I marvel at what the Breyer team is able to pull off and the transformation that the Kentucky Horse Park undergoes is a wonder. The event improves every year – even our virtual experience in 2020 was a real treat!
Though I was sad not to be able to teach my workshops in person this year, I know we will be back on site again in the future and I can look forward to the hugs from my students again. My favorite part of getting to teach workshops is lighting that fire in a young, budding collector. I especially love getting to see my students back at the Clarion, still excited about their experience from during the day.
In recent years, some of my favorite moments have been sitting in the Horse Park to watch the sun set while the horses play in the paddocks. It is just heaven on earth to watch them. But, I think my all-time favorite BreyerFest moment was when, many years ago, a little girl was at the Breyer table trying to buy a raffle ticket and she only had 75 cents. My husband was standing nearby and gave her the quarter that she needed to make the purchase. She bought her one raffle ticket and wouldn’t you know it – her name was called as a winner! She came running up to us after the drawing to show us her prize and I’m not sure who was more excited about the win – her or my husband!”

my favorite is seeing all the beautiful horses! I was sad when I was not able to see them in person, but I was glad I was able to see them online. And I hope I will be able to see them again soon !

Oh, what a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing! My favorite thing to do at BreyerFest is help people learn about the event and listen to their stories! It makes everything so magical for me! Of course, I also love to watch the real horses as well and who doesn’t love buying new plastic ponies! I love that new pony smell!
