The Final Release of the 2025 Exotic Destinations Series!
Prepare to be taken to some of the most beautiful destinations around the world – in equine form! Artist Sommer Prosser has dreamed up a new series highlighting both the beauty of our world, and the horses that inhabit it.
Our last Exotic Destination of the year is Salzburg, Austria, where the Noriker breed was formed. Getting its name from the former Roman province Noricum, this moderately sized draft breed’s development fell to the archbishops of Salzburg until the state created their own stud farms in the 1800s. These biddable and strong horses found a place in ceremonies, but they truly thrived in agriculture. The Noriker’s use in the difficult terrain of the country’s alpine regions, and the needs of the people of the Middle Ages, saw these horses become heavier and more versatile over time. They not only worked the land, but they also served as mounts for knights and as carriage horses. While the breed typically displays solid dark coat colors, Norikers with spotted coats have long been prized.
Artist Sommer Prosser designed Salzburg’s coat to exemplify the beautiful Noriker. He has the breed’s rare flashy bay leopard appaloosa coat and “Salzburg 2025” on his belly in gold.
