It is said that "eyes are the window to the soul." A well-painted eye is a simple but incredibly effective way to breathe life into your custom model horse. Stephanie Blaylock, a renowned model horse finishwork artist known especially for her fleabitten greys and leopard appaloosas (including Breyer's Vermeer!), will show you her techniques for painting eyes with beginner-friendly supplies in this video tutorial.

Supply List:

  • Painted custom model horse
    • The model used in this tutorial was painted by Stephanie with Pan Pastels and acrylic paints.
  • Small paintbrush
    • Stephanie's favorite detail brush is the Rhapsody Kolinsky Sable detail brush 2/0.
      (Available at Blick or Jerry’s Artarama.)
  • Acrylic paint in colors:
    • Burnt umber
    • Burnt sienna
    • Black
    • Light ivory
    • Ceramcoat Tawny Medium (flesh tone)
    • Stephanie uses Ceramcoat and FolkArt craft paints in this tutorial.
  • Prismacolor colored pencils in colors:
    • Oche Brûlée (or a burnt sienna/similar shade)
    • White (or similar - French gray, etc. - for highlights)
    • Black
  • Liquitex high gloss varnish
  • Mr. Super Clear matte spray sealant

Optional Supplies:

  • PearlEx powder
    • Can be added to the black paint of the pupil for an iridescent look.
