Today’s BreyerFest demo group features another crowd favorite breed that is perfect for pint sized snuggles: the Miniature Horse. Meet Skip to My Lulu! This little mare inspires others to live life to the fullest. Lulu was rescued from a half-collapsed barn by the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation and was found starved, abused, in foal, with her right eye so badly damaged that it had to surgically be removed. She was wild and did not trust anyone, which gave her the label “unadoptable” by many until 11-year-old Aimee Schulz came along.

Being the first person that Lulu started to trust after her rescue, Aimee adopted the spunky mare in 2009. Shortly after, the pair hit the show ring and quickly made a name for themselves, taking on registered horses and winning. The one-eyed rescue horse with unknown bloodlines, as she was known as to many people showing at American Miniature Horse Registry competitions, racked up top accolades including the National Championship in the Youth Hunter class and Youth Jumper class, as well as multiple National Top Ten placings in the Amateur and Open divisions.

While Lulu has made quite an impact in the show ring, her reach doesn’t stop there. Lulu and Aimee share the little mare’s story of courage and hope with people from all over, showing just how amazing rescue horses and horses with disabilities are! The pair give demonstrations, participate in horse expos, walk in parades, attend fundraisers, and visit people in churches, stores, and nursing homes. She also has been a lesson horse, teaching both youth and adults the finer parts of horsemanship. In recognition of both her achievements in the show ring and her impact on others, Lulu was inducted into the 2016 Equus Foundation/USEF Horse Stars Hall of Fame.
Skip to My Lulu was one of our Breyer 75th Anniversary essay contest finalists. She and Aimee are excited to return to BreyerFest this summer and perform! Lulu continues to touch people’s lives and change the world’s view on horses, especially rescue horses, wherever she goes.
